at Newton … The Newton Eagles boys and girls cross country teams competed against Oblong at Sam Parr State Park.
Hayden Borgic finished first for the Newton boys (16:12), Jackson Sornberger finished second (16:22), Isaac Street finished third (16:45), Tanner Whitaker finished fourth (17:44), Alec Bower finished sixth (18:01), Levi Salyers finished seventh (18:05), Johnnie Brant finished eighth (18:09) and Tyler Spiker finished ninth (20:21).
Layna Marshall finished first for the Newton girls (18:16), Shay Bennett finished second (20:48), Avery Geier finished third (20:57), Lily Yager finished fourth (21:22), Kate Bierman finished sixth (23:38) and Leila Tsunekawa finished seventh (23:47).
at Christ Our Rock Lutheran … The St. Anthony Bulldogs defeated Centralia (Christ Our Rock Lutheran), 14-5.
Will Fearday had three hits (two doubles) and two RBIs. Brady Hatton had three hits (one home run) and five RBIs. Brock Fearday had two hits (one home run) and three RBIs. Aiden Lauritzen had two hits and one RBI. Sam Link had two hits (one double) and one RBI. Rogan Allen had two hits (one double) and Vincent Vogel had one hit.
at Teutopolis … The Teutopolis Wooden Shoes defeated the Altamont Indians in a doubleheader at Teutopolis High School Baseball Field.
T-Town won the first game, 1-0, and the second game, 15-5.
Jason Kreke had three hits and one RBI. Henry Thompson had three hits. Davin Worman hit one triple. Mick Niebrugge had two hits (one double) and one RBI. Carter Hoene hit one double and had one RBI. Michael Habing had three hits and four RBIs. Andrew Probst had three hits and three RBIs. Teagan Pals hit one double and had three RBIs and Dawson Hoene and Ben Grunloh each had one hit.
Gavin Addis pitched the first game and allowed two hits and one walk to 14 strikeouts in eight innings. Mick Niebrugge started the second game and allowed one hit, three runs and five walks to six strikeouts in four innings. Aidan Niemerg and Bryce Niebrugge relieved him. Niemerg allowed two runs and two walks to one strikeout in one inning. Bryce Niebrugge allowed one hit in one inning.
As for Altamont, Kaden Wolff had two hits. Reed Stuemke had one hit. Dyson Wagner had one hit and one RBI and Brayden Elam and Kade Milleville each had one RBI.
Kade Milleville started the first game and allowed four hits and one walk to five strikeouts in 6 1/3 innings. Zaine Miller relieved him and allowed two hits and one run in 2/3 of an inning. Keegan Schultz started the second game and allowed three hits, five runs and four walks to one strikeout in two innings. Cooper McManaway and Brayden Elam relieved him. McManaway allowed five hits, five runs (two earned) and one walk to one strikeout in 1 1/3 innings. Elam allowed five hits, five runs and five walks to three strikeouts in two innings.
at Patoka … The Dieterich Movin Maroons defeated Patoka/Odin, 8-3.
Bryce Bohnhoff, Carson Baxter and Ben Schottman each had two hits and one RBI. Alex Schottman had one hit and one RBI. Gavin Meinhart and Justin Boerngen each had one hit and Mason Lidy and Jaxon Funneman each had one RBI.
Gavin French started and allowed five hits, one run and three walks to five strikeouts in six innings. Meinhart relieved him and allowed two unearned runs and four walks in one inning.
at Greenville … The Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City Bobcats defeated the Brownstown/St. Elmo Bombers, 2-0, in the third game of the Egyptian Illini Conference Tournament at Greenville University.
AJ Radloff had two hits. Wyatt Rueff hit a triple. Clive Schlanser and Connor Vaughn each had one hit and Conner Nowitzke hit a double.
Kyle Lamb earned the win. He allowed one hit and four walks to eight strikeouts over five-plus innings.
As for Brownstown, Jayce Gillespie hit a double.
Corey Hoopingarner took the loss. He allowed six hits, two runs (one earned) and two walks to four strikeouts in six innings.
at Greenville … The Bombers fell to Mulberry Grove, 15-1, in the second game of the conference tournament.
Zayden Gillespie and Calin Chandler each had one hit.
Chandler took the loss. He allowed five hits, seven runs and two walks in 1/3 of an inning.
at Effingham … The Effingham Flaming Hearts fell to Olney (Richland County), 7-2, at Effingham High School Tennis Courts.
Kristen Armstrong fell to McKenna Snider (3-8), Addy Hemrich fell to Claire Uhl (2-8), Eva Wendling fell to Raley Inskeep (3-8), Ava Rogers defeated Piper Berger (8-7), Makenna Smith fell to Annara Cox (2-8) and Emma Knaus fell to Karlee Bissey (3-8) in singles.
Armstrong and Wendling fell to Snider and Uhl (4-8), Hemrich and Rogers fell to Inskeep and Bissey (1-8) and Smith and Knaus defeated Brielle Sieler and Audry Runyon (8-3).
at Effingham … The St. Anthony Bulldogs finished first and the Effingham Flaming Hearts finished second in a triangular with Mattoon at Effingham Country Club.
Addie Krouse shot a final-round 36. Mia Schwing shot a 39. Brooklyn Phillips shot a 41 and Tesa Ludwig shot a 45 for St. Anthony. The scores that didn’t count were Adria Moberly’s 46 and Gianna Frisbie’s 47.
Ella Tuman shot a final round 40. Makenna Mayhood shot a 42. Natalie Armstrong shot a 43 and Grace Harper shot a 46 for Effingham. The scores that didn’t count were Allison Kroenlein’s 46, Mya Harvey’s 47, Kylie Pryor’s 52, Addi Ruiz’s 55 and Ella Macklin’s 62.
BOYS & GIRLS GOLFat Ramsey … The Altamont Indians boys and girls golf teams competed against the Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg Hatchets and Ramsey at Ramsey Lake Golf Course.
Evan Elam finished with a final-round 43 for the Altamont boys. Joel Bauer shot a 46. Alex Walker shot a 47 and Tyler Ruffner shot a 50. The scores that didn’t count were Charlie Goeckner’s 50, Owen Reardon’s 54 and Cooper Hankins’ 58.
Sophia Pearcy finished with a final-round 48 for the Altamont girls. Gabriella Weishaar and Cecilia Pearcy each shot 54 and Emma Sphar shot a 62. The score that didn’t count was Meghan Goeckner’s 65.
Bailey Owens fired a final-round 49 for Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg. Jillian Porter shot a 51. Kaylin Saunders shot a 54 and Addie Porter shot a 63. The score that didn’t count was Kinley Chaney’s 63.
VOLLEYBALLat Effingham … The Effingham Flaming Hearts defeated Mattoon in two sets at Effingham High School.
EHS won the first set 25-13 and the second 25-17.

at Lawrenceville … The Newton Lady Eagles defeated Lawrenceville in two sets.

at Cerro Gordo … The Cumberland Lady Pirates defeated Cerro Gordo/Bement in two sets.
Cumberland won the first set 25-15 and the second 25-16.

at North Clay … The South Central Lady Cougars defeated the North Clay Lady Cardinals in two sets.
South Central won the first set 25-21 and the second 25-16.

“We got off to a fantastic start,” head coach Jamie Harvel said. “We were firing on all cylinders. We lost our focus down the home stretch. South Central could do no wrong, but we couldn’t do anything right. Game 2 saw a lot of the same. They gave us an opening, but we couldn’t take advantage of it and close the gap quickly enough. We have a lot of things to work on before our home game Monday against Teutopolis.”
SOCCERat Effingham … The Effingham Flaming Hearts defeated Mt. Vernon, 5-0, at Klosterman Field at Washington Savings Bank Stadium.
Maicol Sefton had three goals and one assist. Jacob Warner and Rece Kinney each had one goal. Jake Niebrugge, Sebastian Simoni and Connor Delong each had one assist and Peter Rosen had one save.
“We had another strong team performance tonight,” head coach Logan Arney said. “We ended the first half up 1-0 but turned things up in the second half, finishing with five goals. The entire team played well, stayed organized and communicated well.”
BOYS GOLFat Taylorville … The Effingham Flaming Hearts finished fifth at the Apollo Conference Boys Golf Tournament at Lakeshore Golf Course.
Effingham finished with a team score of 320. Mahomet-Seymour finished first at 303, Charleston was second at 304, Mt. Zion was third at 309, Mattoon was fourth at 314 and Taylorville was sixth at 435.
Leo Wyckoff shot a final-round 77. Max Seachrist shot an 80. Cannon Bockhorn shot an 81 and Brody Boehm shot an 82. The scores that didn’t count were Rayden Schneider’s 86 and Jude Traub’s 91.
