MATTOON, Ill. — The Teutopolis Lady Shoes girls tennis team had a successful weekend, winning the 14-team Mattoon Invitational on Saturday.
In the No. 2 singles bracket, Adi Davidson won after defeating Flora’s Elena Warren (6-2, 6-2), St. Thomas More’s Luciana Grant (6-1, 6-1) and Mattoon’s Avery Boyer (2-6, 6-3, 10-4).
Anna Probst and Allie Ruholl took first in the No. 1 doubles bracket, defeating Paris’ Emerson Barrett and Bella Moreschi (6-1, 6-4), Mt. Zion’s Gadiel Velasco and Caroline Huss (6-3, 6-2) and Flora’s Jenny Powless and Elise Duke (6-1, 6-2).
Ella Wermert and Lily Stortzum won the No. 2 doubles bracket, defeating Mt. Zion’s Caroline Tanner and Clare Bradley (6-0, 6-0), Robinson’s Hannah Davis and Olivia Watwood (6-1, 6-0), Flora’s Addie Larch and Makenna Hackney (6-4, 6-3) and Richland County’s Raley Inskeep and Karlee Bissey (6-1, 6-3).
Abbie Lee placed third in the No. 1 singles bracket, defeating Flora’s Leah Jones (2-6, 6-1, 10-4), St. Thomas More’s Catherine Ra (7-6, 0-6, 10-3) and Mt. Zion’s Paityn Koester (6-4, 6-3) and losing to Robinson’s Annie List (0-6, 2-6).
The Effingham Flaming Hearts also competed in the tournament. Makenna Smith went 0-2 in the No. 1 singles bracket, losing to Alton’s Lilly Schuler (1-6, 0-6) and Paris’ Kaidence Eveland (3-8). Emma Knaus went 0-2 in the No. 2 singles bracket, losing to St. Thomas More’s Grant (0-6, 1-6) and Paris’ Myah Bartos (8-1).
Kristen Armstrong and Eva Wendling went 1-2 in the No. 1 doubles bracket, defeating Urbana’s Grace Coady and Christine Pschirrer (8-2) and losing to Flora’s Powless and Duke (0-6, 1-6) and Mattoon’s Gracie Willingham and Ava Butler (6-8). Addy Hemrich and Ava Rogers went 1-2 in the No. 2 doubles bracket, defeating Charleston’s Mia Carcasi and Victoria Lim (8-5) and lost to Paris’ Shelby Fry and Ava Barrett (4-6, 5-7) and Mattoon’s Ellie Miller and Ava Taylor (3-8).

at Bloomington Purple Invitational … The St. Anthony Bulldogs competed at the Bloomington Purple Invitational on Saturday.
Julia Schultz finished 1-2 in the No. 1 singles bracket, defeating St. Charles (North), 6-4, 6-3, and losing to Champaign (Central), 2-6, 1-6, and Danville, 5-7, 1-6. Morgan Stephens went 1-2 in the No. 2 singles bracket, defeating Normal (Community West), 6-3, 6-1, and losing to Danville, 3-6, 1-6, and Normal (Community), 2-6, 2-6.
Mia Kinkelaar and Ellie Link finished 2-2 in the No. 1 doubles bracket, defeating Belleville (West), 6-4, 6-0, and Morton, 6-2, 6-2, and losing to Downers Grove (South), 6-4, 3-6, 3-10, and Peoria (Richwoods), 2-6, 1-6. Liv Hoene and Nora Trupiano finished 2-2 in the No. 2 doubles bracket, defeated Bloomington (Central Catholic), 6-0, 6-0, and Morton, 6-2, 6-2, and losing to Dunlap, 7-6, 5-7, 3-10, and Belleville (West), 3-6, 1-6. Gabby Kabbes and Ivy Daiber went 3-1 in the No. 3 doubles bracket, defeating Champaign (Central), 6-2, 6-0, Bloomington, 6-1, 6-0, and Morton, 6-3, 1-6, 10-3, and losing to Dunlap, 3-6, 4-6.
at Effingham … The Teutopolis Lady Shoes defeated the Effingham Flaming Hearts, 9-0, on Thursday.
Lee defeated Armstrong (6-0, 6-1). Davidson beat Hemrich (6-1, 6-0). Ruholl beat Wendling (6-0, 6-0). Stortzum beat Rogers (6-2, 6-0). Wermert beat Smith (6-1, 6-1) and Sami Habing defeated Knaus (6-0, 6-1) in singles play. Ruholl and Probst beat Armstrong and Wendling (6-0, 6-0). Stortzum and Wermert beat Rogers and Hemrich (6-2, 6-2) and Lee and Katelyn Frese defeated Knaus and Raegan Kreke (6-0, 6-0) in doubles.
at Casey-Westfield … The Newton Lady Eagles fell to Casey-Westfield, 5-4, on Thursday.
Paige Klingler fell to Elise Derome (1-10). Jailyn Hall beat Julia Eckerty (10-7) and Olivia Sornberger beat Allyson Truelove (3-0) in singles.
Klingler and Hall fell to Eckerty and Truelove (10-11). Chloe Kroenlein and Kendall Sessions fell to Gracie Taylor and Derome (1-10) and Izzy Probst and Sornberger fell to Addison Seaton and Daisy Mumford (7-10) in doubles.
at Effingham … The Effingham Flaming Hearts fell to Mattoon, 9-0, on Sept. 3.
Armstrong fell to Willingham (3-6, 2-6). Wendling fell to Kam Lathrop (0-6, 2-6) and Hemrich fell to Boyer (2-6, 2-6) in singles.

Klingler fell to List (0-6, 1-6). Hall lost to Lauren Staller (6-1, 7-5, 3-10) and Sornberger lost to Isabelle Sutfin (3-6, 6-2, 9-11) in singles.
Klingler and Hall fell to Staller and Sutfin (3-6, 6-7). Kroenlein and Sessions fell to List and Kate Rosborough (2-6, 1-6) and Izzy Probst and Sornberger defeated Addy and Avery Strauch (6-4, 6-4).
at Effingham … The Teutopolis Lady Shoes took first at the St. Anthony Invitational, finishing with 36.5 points, on Aug. 31.
St. Anthony was second with 34.5 points. Teutopolis’ junior varsity team finished eighth with 12 points and St. Anthony’s junior varsity team finished tied for 10th with Effingham with 8.5 points.
Lee finished second in the No. 1 doubles bracket, defeating Charleston (8-0), Morton (5-7, 7-5, 10-6) and Mt. Zion (6-3, 6-0) and losing to Robinson (6-7, 1-6). T-Town’s Cecilia Donsbach finished fourth, defeating Casey-Westfield (8-6) and Bloomington Central Catholic (6-2, 6-4) before losing to Robinson (0-6, 1-6) and Mt. Zion (4-6). St. Anthony’s Anna Greene finished 3-1 and Elle Keller finished 1-2 and Effingham’s Rogers finished 1-2.
Stortzum won the No. 2 singles bracket, defeating Shelbyville (8-0), St. Anthony’s Gabby Kabbes (6-1, 6-0), Mt. Zion (6-2, 6-0) and Morton (6-2, 6-0). St. Anthony’s Julia Schultz finished third, defeating Teutopolis’ Alexis Bloemer (8-1), Mattoon (6-2, 4-6, 10-8) and Mt. Zion (6-1, 6-1) and losing to Morton (6-1, 5-7, 8-10). Bloemer finished 1-2, Kabbes finished 2-1 and Effingham’s Hemrich finished 1-2.
Daiber won the No. 3 singles bracket, defeating Charleston (8-0), Morton (7-5, 6-1), Mattoon (6-3, 6-0) and Bloomington Central Catholic (1-6, 6-4, 10-8). T-Town’s Frese finished 3-1. Effingham’s Mitchell finished 1-2. St. Anthony’s Rylan Boggs finished 1-2 and T-Town’s Maddie Niemerg finished 0-2.
Anna Probst and Davidson won the No. 1 doubles bracket, defeating Effingham’s Armstrong and Wendling (6-0, 6-1), Bloomington Central Catholic (6-1, 6-0) and St. Anthony’s Kinkelaar and Link (6-4, 6-3). Kinkelaar and Link defeated Casey-Westfield (8-4), Robinson and Mt. Zion (6-0, 6-3). Armstrong and Wendling finished 3-1. St. Anthony’s Katie Wrigley and Ella Swearingen finished 1-2 and T-Town’s Avery Probst and Carly Witges finished 1-2.
Hoene and Trupiano won the No. 2 doubles bracket, defeating Robinson (8-1), Charleston (6-3, 6-1), T-Town’s Grace Koester and Olivia Willenborg (6-1, 6-1) and T-Town’s Wermert and Ruholl (6-3, 6-2). Wermert and Ruholl defeated Casey-Westfeild (8-0), St. Anthony’s Stephens and Sadie Vineyard (6-0, 6-0) and Mattoon’s Lucy Ferrar and Lilly Daniels (3-6, 6-4, 10-7). Koester and Willenborg defeated Shelbyville (8-1), Mattoon (6-0, 6-3) and Mattoon’s Willingham and Butler (6-1, 6-3). Effingham’s Smith and Knaus finished 2-2 and St. Anthony’s Stephens and Vineyard finished 1-2.
