A standout softball player for Edmeston/Morris won The Daily Star’s first Athlete of the Week Award for spring sports.
Chelsey Clegg, a senior center fielder from Edmeston, had a home run to help Edmeston/Morris beat host Laurens/Milford in a Tri-Valley League game Thursday, April 16.
Clegg had two hits, scored two runs and had an RBI in the 15-5 win.
The Athlete of the Week nominations for the week of April 19-25, are:
Jacey O’Donnell, Gilboa-Conesville/Roxbury softball: O’Donnell, a Roxbury senior, had a gem of a game Tuesday, April 21, in G-C/R’s 23-8 win over host Hunter-Tannersville. She had three hits, including a home run, and scored two runs and had two RBI.
Bailey Thayer, Cherry Valley-Springfield/Sharon Springs softball: Thayer, a sophomore at CV-S, had a great week in the circle and at the plate. She got her 200th varsity strikeout in a 6-3 win over Laurens/Milford on Tuesday, April 21, in Milford. She had five strikeouts overall and got the win. In a 17-2 home win over Hunter-Tannersville, she had a home run and three RBI.
Brinlee Wright, Charlotte Valley/Schenevus softball: Wright, a Charlotte Valley senior, also had a big milestone as she became the top strikeout pitcher in school history with 516 strikeouts, beating a record set by Jenna Lutz in 2016. Wright set the mark Wednesday, April 22, in Schenevus, as CV/S beat South Kortright/Andes, 6-5. She had 12 strikeouts in the nine-inning win, as well as three hits. She not only got the pitching win, but she also scored the game-winning run after a single and three stolen bases. Two days later, in an 8-2 win over visiting Gilboa-Conesville/Roxbury, she pitched a three-hitter with 13 strikeouts and also had two hits and two RBI.
Garrett Dropp, South Kortright baseball: Dropp, a South Kortright sophomore, had a great week. Dropp pitched a two-hitter with 10 strikeouts in a 4-0 Delaware League win at Windham on Tuesday, April 21. He also had seven strikeouts and got the win Friday, April 24, as the Rams beat Stamford/Jefferson, 19-9. He had two RBI in a 13-12 home win over Edmeston/Morris on Wednesday, April 22.
Caden Laymon, Cherry Valley-Springfield/Sharon Springs baseball: Laymon, a CV-S junior, had a statistical week that will be hard for anyone to top. He had two hits, seven RBI and scored five runs in a 30-1 CV-S/SS win over Laurens/Milford on Tuesday, April 21, in Milford. Two days later at Doubleday Field in Cooperstown, Laymon had two RBI and got the pitching win as CV-S/SS beat Northville/Wells, 8-5.
Brady Carr, Oneonta baseball: Oneonta’s baseball success owes a tip of the cap to Carr, a senior. He threw a two-hitter with nine strikeouts in a 7-1 Oneonta win at Norwich on Friday, April 24. Two days earlier, in a 12-0 win over Norwich at home, Carr had three hits, including a two-run home run.
