PLATTSBURGH — The third period was the difference Tuesday night as the Beekmantown boys’ hockey broke away from Saranac 4-1 in Champlain Valley Athletic Conference play.
Edward Sweenor led the way for the Eagles (5-6-1, 3-0) with two goals and an assist. His two goals came in the third period.
The Spartans (4-8, 1-2), who had their three-game winning streak come to an end, stayed with Beekmantown over the first two periods in a 1-all tie despite getting outshot, 40-20, in the game.
Beekmantown held a 12-2 advantage in shots on goal in the third period. Sweenor put the Eagles ahead to stay, at 2-1, at 2:27 of the stanza. Mason Carter then scored at 4:27, and Sweenor finished it off at 15:08.
“I really liked our intensity and emotion throughout the game,” Saranac coach Robby Knowles said.
“We made a couple of mistakes in the third period, and they made us pay for them. They took the momentum for good and didn’t give it back.”
The contest was scoreless until Evan Bruyere scored on a deflection to give Beekmantown the lead at 1:03 of the second. But Gabe Moore answered for the Spartans at 6:13 to tie it.
Carter added an assist in addition to his goal, and Pryce Parker chipped in with two assists.
Both goalies played well, with Jack Bell stopping 19 of 20 shots in the Beekmantown nets to get the win, and Teegan VanValkenburg making 36 saves on 40 shots in the Saranac goal.
“Our goaltenders the past few games have been good, and that’s helped us stay competitive,” Knowles said. “VanValkenburg gave us a chance to win tonight.
“Full marks to Beekmantown for taking away time and space and not allowing any second-chance opportunities in front of their net. However, we need to play with more grit and get pucks into the middle of the offensive zone.”
It was a good skating game between the two league rivals, and there were only a combined five penalties in the contest.
