The Eagle-Tribune held its annual food drive on Saturday morning, collecting donations from generous members of the public, along with items donated by our employees over the last few weeks.
Over the years the effort has grown and now more than 400 pounds of food – along with personal hygiene and paper products and kitchen supplies – are delivered to Bread & Roses in Lawrence.
Founded in 1980, Bread & Roses operates with the primary purpose of easing hunger. In a typical year the organization provides nearly 65,000 evening meals to those in need.
In more recent years, project Warm and Fuzzy has been coupled with this effort, adding donations of new warm clothing such as sweaters, coats, mittens, hats, scarves and socks. These items — about 5,000 a year — are delivered to Lazarus House in Lawrence.
