LAVALE — Investigators have identified the driver of a vehicle involved in a crash that killed a pedestrian on July 6 in LaVale.
The Allegany County Sheriff’s Office said Thursday evening that charges are pending against the woman, who allegedly fled the scene of the Campground Road accident.
“As a result of the public’s assistance and the work of our investigators, we were able to obtain additional surveillance footage from the incident to identify the female driver and a female passenger of the Subaru Forester,” Allegany County Sheriff’s Office Sgt. Christopher Hill said.
The Times-News is withholding the identity of the driver, because she hadn’t been charged.
The Subaru was one of three vehicles to strike the victim, Tina M. Gillespie, 54, of Cumberland. The drivers of the other two vehicles stayed at the scene and were cooperating with authorities, according to the sheriff’s office.
Investigators released photos of the Subaru on Tuesday asking for the public’s help to identify the driver.
Hill said that after reviewing surveillance footage that was not released to the public and working with the Walmart security team and their surveillance video, investigators were able to identify the driver.
The vehicle was seized for evidence recovery, the sheriff’s office said, adding charges would be filed after consultation with the Office of the State’s Attorney. The passenger of the vehicle will not be charged.
Hill said Allegany County Combined Criminal Investigation Unit and Cumberland Police Department were also involved in the case.
