WENHAM — A black Honda sedan rolled over on Route 128 northbound Wednesday afternoon, trapping the driver inside.
The driver, who first responders described as seriously injured, was freed from the wreck with hydraulic extrication tools and taken to Beverly Hospital.
An update from state police just before 5 p.m. said the driver had suffered fatal injuries, but no further details were available.
Shortly before 2:20 p.m., state troopers assigned to the Danvers Barracks and Wenham first responders were called to Route 128 northbound in the area of Exit 48 (Grapevine Road) in Wenham for reports of a rollover crash with entrapment.
A press release from the Wenham Fire Department said the driver was the only occupant of the car.
Deputy Chief Jeffrey Baxter, who was one of the first on the scene, called for the Beverly Fire Department to respond as well with their hydraulic extrication tools, as they were nearby and could get there quickly.
The extrication tools were used to free the trapped driver and the victim was then taken to the hospital by Beauport Ambulance paramedics.
Manchester-by-the-Sea police and the state Department of Transportation responded to the scene as well.
All northbound lanes in that area were closed for approximately 2½ hours with traffic diverted at Grapevine Road, while the on-scene investigation was conducted by state police.
Northbound lanes were reopened to traffic just before 5 p.m., according to state police.
“I want to thank all of our mutual aid partners, including Wenham police, Beverly fire, Manchester-by-the-Sea police, Massachusetts State Police and the Department of Transportation for their prompt and professional responses to this incident,” said Wenham fire Chief Stephen Kavanagh. “Our mutual aid support is always critical, especially when serious incidents like this occur.”
