VIENNA – Thomasville’s final spring outing on Friday revealed the potential of next year’s Bulldogs as they prepare for a season in Region 1-A Division I.
Thomasville quarterback Cam Hill threw for four touchdowns, the defense swarmed to the ball and the Bulldogs throttled Dooly County 31-7 in their spring scrimmage in Vienna.
“For me, this was the perfect spring game, because it wasn’t perfect,” Thomasville coach Jonathan DeLay said. “We did some unbelievable things. I told the team the other day after last week’s game, the Red and Gold game, that I feel like we’ve got about 10 guys that if the ball is in their hands, they can go score. Four of them tonight, they had a touch and went and scored.”
Hill and the Bulldogs capitalized on Thomasville’s plethora of play-making talent. He threw to receivers in space, and four times in the first half the Bulldogs receivers found the end zone.
Si Wilson snagged a 10-yard reception to start the scoring. Lavonte Cole scampered 81 yards on a screen pass to extend the lead to 17-0. Another quick pass to Anthony Hill Jr. led to a 38-yard score. Teammate Nigel Pittman capped the first half with a seven-yard scoring reception.
“One of the things we say is the only play you’ve got to make is the play you’ve got to make, because you never know when it’s coming. Before we went out on the field, I told Lavonte, ‘Catch this screen, and take it 80.’ He comes back with a big ol’ grin on his face and looked at me dead in the eye and said, ‘Coach, it’s the only play you’ve got to make,’” DeLay said. “That’s where I know this team is going in the right direction, when guys, your leaders are bought in.”
The Bulldogs’ defense stymied the Bobcats. Linebackers Tyler Ivey and Kiff Parrish flew to the ball and helped kept Dooly County off the scoreboard until late in the game when its only touchdown came against the backups.
“Defensively, they flew around. Tyler Ivey is all over the field. D-line, we just about had four picks on the D-line. The Thomasville defense, I thought it played like the Thomasville defense tonight,” DeLay said.
