OXFORD — Singer/songwriter and dobro player Abbie Gardner will return to 6 On The Square in Oxford at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, March 9.
According to a media release, after more than 10 years as one-third of the female folk trio Red Molly, Gardner returned to touring as a solo artist in 2016.
The group — formed around a campfire at the Falcon Ridge Folk Festival in 2004 — found fame with its tight harmonies and infectious spirit, performing around the world from Denver to Denmark and from Australia to Austin.
Gardner, a New York City native, got an early look at life in the music world from her dad, Herb Gardner, who is a Dixieland trombonist and a swing jazz and stride pianist.
Although she also remembers when her mother took her to her first bluegrass festival at age 3, Gardner studied classical flute, played violin for a year, and dabbled with the guitar. She didn’t necessarily see herself as having a career in music.
In 2004, the same year Red Molly formed, Gardner found her instrument of choice: the dobro, otherwise known as a resonator guitar, which is favored by many bluegrass and Americana musicians. Since then, she has made a name for herself as a slide player on a variety of different guitars.
Her fourth solo album, “DobroSinger,” hit No. 11 on the Billboard Blues Chart in 2022. It’s describes as intimate, real and raw — her dobro and voice recorded at the same time at home, without a band or any studio tricks to hide behind.
Tickets are $20 in advance and will be $25 at the door. They may be purchased online at 6onthesquare.org or call 607-843-6876 to make a reservation. The doors will open at 6:30 p.m.
The show also will be streamed live online for $10, with more information provided at 6onthesquare.org.
