PETOSKEY — Boyne City is moving on to the girls Division 2 district semifinals, but Kalkaska had a different outcome.
The Ramblers (10-13) won their third straight D2 district quarterfinal game Monday at Petoskey after defeating Grayling 49-34. Kalkaska suffered a 38-30 loss to Cheboygan to end their season 1-18.
After losing the first two meetings, the Ramblers picked up their first victory against the Vikings this season.
“We talked about it at length that the postseason is a new season. Everybody’s slate is clean, so the girls went into the game with that mentality and answered the call,” Boyne City head coach Mike Wilson said.
The Vikings led the Ramblers 17-12 in the first quarter before Boyne City turned it around to go on a 5-0 run to start the second. After several lead changes, the Ramblers led 25-23 at halftime and maintained a lead throughout the second half.
Wilson said the Ramblers had a different style of defense for the Vikings they didn’t expect. Boyne City held Grayling to 11 total points in the second half after allowing 17 in the first quarter.
Ramblers’ junior Braydin Noble led things with 14 points, followed by freshman Addison Burns with 13.
The Vikings’ Makayla Watkins led the team with 11 points, and Amanda Lewis finished with seven.
The Ramblers return to Petoskey for the district semifinals on Wednesday to face the host. Boyne City has already faced Petoskey this season but lost 54-31. Wilson noted his team feels as if they are an underdog in the districts and have treated every game as such.
“We do realize athletically they got a sound team, and we have to do everything right to have a chance to win; but if the girls come out and respond we’ve got an opportunity for an upset,” Wilson said.
Cheboygan led the entire game against Kalkaska, but the Blazers stayed within distance to make it a three-point game with under three minutes to play in the fourth quarter. Cheboygan faces Kingsley in the D2 district semifinals on Wednesday.
