A new analysis by Omega Law Group, a personal injury law firm in Los Angeles, California, reveals a crash finding that might surprise you. In 2024, single-vehicle crashes resulted in almost 21,800 fatalities, comprising 60.1% of all 36,297 fatal motor vehicle crashes in the U.S. The survey found that one-vehicle crashes were deadlier than angle, head-on, rear-end, and sideswipe crashes combined.
That finding moves the story beyond the usual two-car collision frame. It points to a different kind of road-safety problem where lane departures, fixed-object impacts, rollovers, late-night driving, rural road design, speed, impairment, distraction, and fatigue can turn a single vehicle into a fatal crash.
That flips the common crash narrative: the biggest fatal threat is not always another driver, but one vehicle leaving the road, striking an object or rolling over. One-vehicle crashes kill more often than all other major crash type combined. Angle, head-on, rear-end, and sideswipe crashes together accounted for 14,307 fatal crashes in 2024. Single-vehicle crashes alone accounted for 21,797 fatalities, according to the survey.
That means one-car road departures — most often hitting a fixed object such as a tree, power pole, ditch, embankment, guide-rail base, and others — are the most common fatal crash. The 2024 data show these are not isolated tragedies. They are part of the largest fatal crash pattern in America. That finding shifts the road-safety conversation from “bad drivers hitting other drivers” to a bigger public-safety question: why are so many people dying when no second vehicle is involved?
Roadside risk varies by where people drive. Trees, ditches, embankments, fences, and culverts point to rural and high-speed road dangers, including our rural North Country area. Curbs, utility poles, traffic signs, and concrete barriers show how city and suburban roads can also turn a lane departure into a fatal crash.
The data raise an urgent question for transportation and public safety leaders: are roadsides giving drivers a chance to recover, or turning one mistake into a fatal impact?
Traffic engineers can’t prevent all road departures, or not come even close. Guide rails help where a departure can easily become a fatal, but the biggest challenge to highway engineers is to give drivers a chance to survive, even if the go off the road.
