FLINTSTONE — Allegany County Sheriff’s Office deputies are working with Pennsylvania officials to identify the driver that was killed in a Sunday morning crash east of Flintstone.
Investigators said Wednesday that the driver was a man, but they are limited to the amount of information that can be released, Sgt. Christopher Hill said.
“Our investigation has tentatively led us to the Pittsburgh area to identify the male,” Hill said. “The investigation is still ongoing.”
Hill said investigators obtained medical and dental records of the victim to assist in identifying him.
The fiery crash was reported just before 3 a.m. Sunday on National Pike between John Stewart and Old Cumberland roads, according to an Allegany County Joint Communications Center spokesperson.
The initial caller reported hearing an explosion and seeing fire across from their house.
When firefighters arrived, they found an overturned vehicle that was engulfed in flames, the Joint Communications Center said.
Units from Flintstone, Orleans and Baltimore Pike volunteer fire departments and Allegany County Department of Emergency Services responded.
Investigators said the vehicle involved in the crash was a red Toyota RAV4.
Cpl. Andy Plummer said the initial investigation showed that the vehicle was traveling west on National Pike when the crash occurred.
The victim, the only occupant, was taken to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Baltimore, Plummer said.
