Niagara Falls police say the body of a homeless man exposed to the recent extreme cold weather was found Wednesday afternoon.
The body was located about 4 p.m. behind a building in the 8700 block of Niagara Falls Boulevard. City firefighters and ambulance crew also responded to the scene. Foul play is not suspected, according to police at the scene.
There are a number of “Code Blue” shelters across the area available for individuals to escape the cold weather during the day and overnight when the real temperature drops below 32F.
In Lockport, for overnight shelter, any homeless person or individual without home heating may go directly to the Salvation Army, 50 Cottage St., between 8 and 10 p.m.
After 10 p.m., anyone needing shelter should go to the walk-up window at Lockport Police Department, Niagara Street entrance, for assistance.
This week, the lobby of Lockport City Hall was made available for warming from 4 to 8 p.m. during Code Blue events.
The mayor’s office recently extended the current Code Blue declaration through 8 a.m. Jan. 27, due to consistently below-freezing temperatures.
Niagara County Crisis Services has also created a list of warming shelters available to individuals during Code Blue. Call 716-285-3515 for more information.
