CUMBERLAND — County United Way has announced the week’s schedule for participating volunteers in the 28th Annual Day of Caring and Sharing in Cumberland set for Friday.
Pick up for flowers, tools, gloves, garbage bags, fertilizer and T-shirts has been set for Wednesday between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. at Veterans Memorial Park on South Centre Street.
T-shirts can be picked up at the County United Way office at 115 Baltimore St., Suite 203 after 1 p.m.
The Day of Caring and Sharing schedule for Friday begins at 8 a.m. with an opening ceremony, welcome and CSX safety briefing at Veterans Park.
Work at project sites begins at 8:30 a.m. There will be a flag ceremony at Liberty Gardens at noon and lunch will be available beginning at 12:30 p.m. at the Constitution Park Main Pavilion. Volunteers may eat at the park or can send someone to pick up their group’s lunches. Work site volunteers are asked to return their tools to the picnic pavilion at lunch time or return them to Windsor Castle.
Organizers said the event will take place rain or shine.
The Day of Caring & Sharing is a partnership between County United Way, Let’s Beautify Cumberland! and the city of Cumberland that began in 1997. Sponsored this year by Columbia Gas of Maryland, CSX Transportation and the Cumberland Times-News, the event brings together people throughout the community to work on projects across the Queen City.
Many of the annual adopted projects involve improvements recommended by CUW-funded nonprofit partners.
“We have volunteers and participating organizations that have been coming out to help our city for over two decades, yet every year we are also blessed with others who are stepping forward for the first time,” United Way Executive Director Michele Walker said. “Year in and year out, our volunteers can take a step back at end of a busy day and see the difference they’ve made at their work site.”
