While the city begins work on some of its most damaged streets today, city officials have reopened a debate on the one street that seemed to have a solution — Davison Road.
In a public work session on Wednesday, 2nd Ward Alderman Anita Mullane asked about what seemed to be a reduction in the length of the approved road construction project for the north section of Davison Road.
In late April, the council unanimously passed a resolution to have Highway Rehabilitation Corp. rebuild Davison Road from East Avenue to Akron Street using hot in-place mill recycling.
The city’s paving list, released May 2, listed the Davison Road project as running from East Avenue to the Davison Road Inn.
Mayor John Lombardi III said earlier this month that he was interested in switching the Davison Road project to Market Street.
Council President and 4th Ward Alderman Katherine Fogle said she remembered groundwater issues at Davison Road needing to be addressed in order for future paving to last.
“That road floats,” Director of Highways, Parks and Water Distribution Clayton Dimmick said in agreement. “Somebody has to tell me what we’re doing. If you want to try (Davison), let’s do it. I think Market Street would be better.”
“I think Market Street is number one,” Fogle said.
On Tuesday, the city announced on its website that it would begin milling several sections of streets on the north side today and Friday. Milling creates a base layer on which streets are paved. The release, issued under Dimmick’s name, also said there will be no parking on the following streets from 6 a.m. until street work is completed:
• Main Street from Saxton Street to Transit
• Genesee Street from Transit Street to Pine Street
• Gooding Street underpass from Grand Street to Caledonia Street
• Transit Street from Walnut Street to Main Street
• Saxton Street from Walnut Street to Genesee Street
• Cottage Street from Walnut Street to Genesee Street
• Chestnut Street from Elm Street to Washburn Street
Dimmick said residents will receive a notice prior to paving. No date was provided for when paving would be done.
