Amesbury’s Most Improved Award winner, and arguably the most improved player in the CAL. Played limited minutes a year ago, but earned a starting role this winter and was named a Second Team CAL All-Star. Do-it-all player averaged 9.0 ppg with 15 total 3s and was the team’s top rebounder. Helped Amesbury (13-8) win the program’s most games in three years and make it back to the Division 4 playoffs. Scored in double figures in eight games. Dropped a season-high 18 points in a win over Triton. Had 17 points against Ipswich, then scored 14 points during each of the team’s two wins over Hamilton-Wenham. Also put up 12 points in a win over Randolph, 11 against both Georgetown (two 3s) and Weston, and 10 on two 3s in a win over Essex Tech. Two-sport athlete also plays soccer.
Olivia McKay
Amesbury, Soph., Guard/Forward
Exciting sophomore is now already a two-time Daily News All-Star. Three-level scorer averaged a team-best 11.8 ppg, and also hit 22 total 3s while shooting 76% from the free throw line. Helped Amesbury (13-8) win the program’s most games in three years and make it back to the Division 4 playoffs. Poured in a team-high 12 points on two 3s in a first round playoff loss to Uxbridge. Scored in double figures in 11 of 16 games she played in. Dropped a season-high 20 points on two 3s in a win over Hamilton-Wenham. Another 19 points in a win over Weston, and 17 points on two 3s in a win over Whittier Tech. Finished with 17 points on 11-of-12 shooting from the foul line against rival Newburyport. Had 13 points with two 3s at Beverly, and a trio of 12-point outings against Randolph, Essex Tech and Triton. Now has 466 total points through her first two years.
Maddy Rodrigues
Amesbury, Frosh., Guard
The sky is the limit for this exciting rookie. Point guard came in as a freshman and immediately took over the team. Was named a CAL All-Star Second Teamer after averaging 10.7 ppg with 23 total 3s. Took home Amesbury’s Team MVP Award after playing 90% of every game. “We knew it was going to be a good or a bad practice if Maddy got a bloody nose or not,” said coach Scott Brown. “If there was blood, we knew she would come out even harder.” Led the Redhawks (13-8) to the program’s most wins in three years, as well as back to the Division 4 playoffs for the second straight season. Scored in double figures in 12 games. Had a season-high 21 points against Manchester Essex, and also dropped 20 points on two 3s in a win over Georgetown. Scored 16 points against both Lynnfield and Newburyport, 13 against Whittier Tech and 12 against Ipswich and Weston.
Haley Dube
Amesbury, Frosh., Guard
The other half of Amesbury’s exciting and talented freshmen backcourt duo. Finished the year averaging 8.0 ppg with 17 total 3s, and earned a spot as a Second Team CAL All-Star. Was the recipient of Amesbury’s Coaches Award. Led the Redhawks (13-8) to the program’s most wins in three years, as well as back to the Division 4 playoffs for the second straight season. “She most always was assigned the unenviable task of covering the other teams best offensive player,” said coach Scott Brown. Scored in double figures in seven games. Hit three 3s and poured in a season-high 19 points against a North Reading team that was ranked No. 7 in Division 3. Had another 17 points on three 3s against Manchester Essex, and 15 points on two triples in a win over Georgetown. Scored 12 points in a win over Bay Path, and 11 against both Hamilton-Wenham and Muniz Academy.
Victoria Barbarick
Georgetown, 8th-grade., Guard
Already a two-year starter. Made our “Honorable Mentions” list last year, but earned her spot this winter as both a Daily News All-Star and Second Team CAL All-Star. Led our area in scoring at 15.6 ppg as an 8th-grader, and also connected on 38 total 3s. Helped Georgetown (6-15) make the Division 4 playoffs and win a preliminary round game over Ipswich. Is already up to 492 career points and hasn’t even technically entered high school yet. Scored in double figures in 16 of 20 games she played in. Exploded for a career-high 32 points on four 3s in a win over Essex Tech. Hit four more 3s and had 25 points against Manchester Essex, then had a pair of 20-point outings against Amesbury and the second time she saw the Hornets. Another 19 points against both Triton and Ipswich, 18 against Lynn English and CAL Kinney-winning Pentucket, and 17 in a huge win over Cohasset.
Ava Bailey
Newburyport, Jr., Guard
Now a two-time Daily News All-Star. Made the leap up to the All-CAL First Team this winter after being named a Second Team CAL All-Star last year. Averaged a team-high 11.6 ppg with 14 total 3s, while also being a team leader in rebounds and assists. Junior captain led Newburyport (14-7) to the Division 2 playoffs. Poured in 25 points with 7 rebounds during the team’s first round playoff loss to Duxbury. Had a monster night in a win over Amesbury with 22 points, 8 rebounds, 5 assists, 5 steals and 5 blocks. Put up a double-double against Billerica with 13 points and 10 boards. Scored 19 points with 15 boards and 6 assists in a win over Georgetown. Had a trio of 15-point nights against Peabody, Lynnfield and Tyngsboro. The Clippers have gone a combined 29-14 the past two years with Bailey being a leading figure. Was also a Daily News Volleyball All-Star this fall.
Clara Thompson
Newburyport, Jr., Forward
Now another two-time Daily News All-Star. Made the leap up to the All-CAL First Team this winter after being named a Second Team CAL All-Star last year. Averaged 10.7 ppg while also being a leading rebounder, and showcased a growing outside game with 9 total 3s. Junior captain led Newburyport (14-7) to the Division 2 playoffs. Poured in a season-high 23 points against Saugus. Best game was arguably a 22-point, 16-rebound night against North Reading. Scored 16 points with 13 rebounds in a win over Lynnfield. Another 18 points against Tewksbury, and 17 against Hamilton-Wenham. Had a double-double against Georgetown with 14 points and 10 rebounds, as well as against Amesbury with 13 points and 10 boards. The Clippers have gone a combined 29-14 the past two years with Thompson being a leading figure. Two-sport athlete was also the starting pitcher for the softball team last spring.
Sofia Bellacqua
Pentucket, Sr., Guard
Leaves as a two-time Daily News All-Star, and earned a spot on the All-CAL First Team this winter after making the CAL All-Star Second Team last year. Four-year varsity player and steady point guard has been the motor that makes the program run. Senior captain helped Pentucket (18-6) win the CAL Kinney title, and make a state quarterfinal for the fourth straight year. Her senior class went a combined 78-20 across their four years. Averaged 4.8 ppg this winter with 18 total 3s, while being a team leader in assists. “Sofia is our glue,” said coach John McNamara. “She’s our defensive intensity setter, and our offensive guard where, she may not get a lot of credit, but she gets everybody into position and brings up the ball.” Dropped a season-high 13 points against Norwood. Had 9 points on two 3s against King Philip.
Devyn Walsh
Pentucket, Jr., Forward
Two-year varsity player enjoyed a breakout season to earn a spot on the All-CAL First Team. Finished second for the Panthers averaging 8.6 ppg, while also leading the team in reboudning. Junior helped Pentucket (18-6) win the CAL Kinney title and make it to a state quarterfinal for a fourth straight year. Had 6 points with 12 rebounds during the team’s first round playoff win over Seekonk, then added 8 more points with 8 boards in a Sweet 16 victory over Hanover. Dropped a season-high 18 points against Oliver Ames in the Spartans Classic. Scored in double figures in 10 games. Had 13 points in a win over Bridgewater-Raynham, and 12 in victories over Hamilton-Wenham and Georgetown. Also put together a trio of 11-point nights in wins over North Reading, North Andover and Essex Tech. Two-sport athlete also plays volleyball during the fall.
