You could certainly call this justice.
We’ve followed the ups-and-downs of the Amesbury golf team all year, which had to win two of its final four matches of the regular season to qualify for the postseason meets as a full team. Unfortunately, though, some tough breaks led to the Redhaws only winning one, and that meant just top-2 golfers Jack Kusler and Gus Headrick could compete at Wednesday’s Division 3 North Sectional Meet at Far Corners.
Well … safe to say that both took full advantage of the opportunity.
Kusler came home with a 7-over 79 to finish in a tie for fourth out of 78 total golfers, while Headrick was just one stroke back firing an 80 to place T8. They both finished high enough to qualify for the Division 3 State Meet next Monday at Blissful Meadows, and are the first Amesbury golfers to accomplish such a feat in 10 years according to athletic director Glen Gearin.
“Jack has been our No. 1 golfer all season averaging 29.1 points, while Gus has been our No. 2 golfer at 27.5 points,” said Amesbury coach Paul Creegan. “I believe we were the only school today to advance two individual golfers to States, so I’m extremely proud of both of them.”
Kusler, a sophomore, turned to the back-9 in 1-over after carding a birdie on the par-4 eighth hole, then made another birdie on the par-4 16th hole coming in. Meanwhile, the junior Headrick just played steady golf and kept the big numbers off the scorecard, making 12 pars with four bogeys and two doubles.
Locally, Triton was the only full team to qualify for the Sectional.
The Vikings finished ninth out of the 11 teams, posting a combined score of 349 (+61). Leading the way was Jack Gagne with an 84 to place T23, while Cullen Kohan was right behind with an 86 (T32) and Evan Allen had an 89 (T40).
