NYSPHSAA Division II Championships
Deposit/Hancock’s Landyn Shaffer and Norwich’s Maverick Beckwith won state titles while Untaego wrestlers Yanni Drapaniotis and Gavin Nordberg each placed third at the state championships Saturday, Feb. 28, at MVP Arena in Albany.
Shaffer, a junior at Hancock, went 4-0 at 138 pounds with two pins Friday and two decisions Saturday. He beat Tioga’s Jayden Duncanson in the finals, 3-1. He finished the season 46-1, according to records from CNYwrestling, after placing third in the state at 131 pounds in 2025.
Beckwith, a junior, won his third state title by going 4-0 at 150 pounds. He beat Owen Clark from Lansing in the finals, 11-0. He won state titles at 108 pounds in 2024 and 124 pounds in 2025, and finished this season 44-3, according to CNYwrestling records.
Nordberg, a junior, pinned Dawson Wojtaszczyk from LeRoy in 2:31 of the third-place match Saturday at 132 pounds. He went 4-1 in the tournament, losing in the semifinals, 7-0, to Justin Mullis from Hudson Falls. Mullis placed second overall. Nordberg finished the season 43-2, according to CNYwrestling records.
Drapaniotis, a senior, lost his only match of the season in the semifinals Saturday, a 6-5 decision to eventual 190-pound champion Tavio Hoose from Southwestern. Drapaniotis beat Trent True from Holland Patent in the third-place match by decision in overtime, 6-3, after a 1-1 tie in regulation. He went 4-1 in the tournament and finished the season 44-1, according to CNYwrestling records. He also placed third in the state at 190 pounds last season.
Justin Somers, a junior from Walton, placed fourth at 144 pounds. He went 4-2 in the tournament, losing in the third-place match, 7-1, to James Chase from Avon/Geneseo.
Oneonta sophomore Clayton Ritter placed sixth at 118 pounds, going 3-3 in the tournament.
Asaac Mead from D/H placed sixth at 150 pounds. Jason Canedo from D/H placed sixth at 132 pounds.
Several other local wrestlers made it to day two of the tournament Saturday but lost in the blood round, the match that determines who makes the podium, including: Max Koffer (132), Cooperstown/Milford, Andrew Spaulding (144), Cooperstown/Milford, Kade Mustin (132), Greene/Oxford, Troy Braman (157) Greene/Oxford, and Jaxon Backus (175) Walton/Delaware Academy.
