The Cullman County Fair Parade heralded the return of one of the county’s most highly anticipated events of the year Saturday, Sept. 28,
Fairground gates are set to open Thursday, Oct. 3, at 5 p.m. and continue until Saturday, Oct. 12. While the fair is scheduled to close each night at 10 p.m., gates are to remain open if demand warrants additional hours.
Students and seniors will be given special early access to the fair with students receiving free entry from 12-5 p.m. Monday, Oct. 7 and seniors receiving the same the following day.
Now in its 70th year, the fair has developed several expected events and attractions such as its pageants, livestock judging competitions and the usual list of handicraft, art, vegetable and baked goods competitions which will continue to give local community members the chances to showcase their talents this year. However, a new contest has been added for anyone particularly adept at the art of scarecrow construction.
The scarecrow contest will feature three divisions. One for individual submissions and another for group entries. A third division has been set up for submissions from young children which does not meet the open criteria. All entries in the child special division will receive ribbons. To enter the contest, submissions must be registered by Wednesday, Oct. 2, between 12 and 5 p.m.
