HAVERHILL — The brutal Tuesday heat forced the switch from 18 holes to nine holes in Round 1 in the New England Women’s Amateur Championship at Haverhill Country Club.
That left for a mighty crowded leaderboard through Day 1.
Mass. high school phenom Maddie Smith and Connecticut’s Amelie Phung shared the first-round lead at even-par 36.
Pinkerton Academy product Julianna Megan was part of a six-player group headed into Round 2 at 1-over par 37.
Rounding out the area scorers in the championship division: Alyson Traficante, Merrimack Valley GC 38; Callie Dias, Renaissance CC 43; Kathryn Ventura, Renaissance CC 43.
In the Senior Division, Kim Grady, playing on her home course at HCC, sits in fifth place after carding a 4-over par 40. She is four shots off the lead.
Chrissy Lumb of Merrimack Valley GC shot 46, and Stacey Freda of Windham CC carded a 47.
