DRACUT – Ten days ago, North Andover’s Emmett LaRosa took second place to Lowell’s James Kelly in the team’s final dual meet of the season. On Saturday afternoon, LaRosa tied things up, as he was crowned the individual champion of the Merrimack Valley Conference cross country championship meet held at Dracut High.
LaRosa came in with a time of 15:48, which was four seconds better than Kelly.
On the girls’ side, as expected Central Catholic freshman Kyla Breslin continued her perfect mark in the league by taking the title with a time of 18:30.
In the team competition, the Billerica girls cruised to the victory as expected, but on the boys’ side, things were thrown for a loop as Billerica also won, beating out Lowell and North Andover. Billerica’s only other title came in 1994.
Pinkerton girls claim state title
Depth and balance carried the Pinkerton Academy girls all the way to the Division I state title on Saturday at Derryfield Park in Manchester.
Taking eighth and covering the 3.1 miles in 20:48.99, Gabrielle Bedard took eighth overall, leading four Astros into the top 16.
The Pinkerton boys came close to making it an Astros’ sweep but were forced to settle for second behind champion Bishop Guertin.
Oscar D’Amelio took fourth place overall to lead the “Long Red Line,” covering the 3.1 miles in 16:47.97.
