The next great Newburyport cross country runner appears to have arrived.
Welcome Nordeen Fadil, who on Wednesday broke a freshman record at Maudslay State Park that had stood since 2013 (Josh Molvar, 16:39). During Newburyport’s 17-44 victory over visiting Essex Tech, he crossed the finish line third overall in 16:25 to place his name into course history. Fadil tied for second during the team’s opening win at North Reading a week ago, then proceeded to break a 12-year-old record his next time out.
And the Clippers (2-0) remained undefeated thanks to it. Two-time Daily News MVP and senior Michael Mohoric once again won the race by nearly a minute (15:28), and he was followed by teammate Jack DeJordy in second (16:17), Finn Devaney in fourth (17:19) and Nolan Winters in seventh (17:54) to round out the team’s top-5 on the day.
Meanwhile in the other race at Maudslay on Wednesday, the Newburyport girls won a close meet over Essex Tech, 24-35. Lydia Boddy was overall meet medalist for the Clippers (2-0) in 20:27, and was followed by sister Morgan Boddy in third (20:37), Isla Trail in fifth (21:04), Abby Porto in sixth (21:07) and Meilia Simone in eighth (21:13).
Up next, Newburyport will host rival Triton next Wednesday (10/1) at 4 p.m.
