Harbormaster boats and other public safety crews from Salem and Beverly were searching early Sunday afternoon for a body in the water below the Beverly-Salem bridge.
An MBTA commuter rail train headed into Boston was stopped in the middle of the train bridge below the bypass road just before noon. Passengers aboard the train said there was an announcement that a “trespasser” on the tracks was struck by the train.
The commuter rail, on its X account, alerted riders on the Newburyport/Rockport line a few minutes later that there would significant delays in both directions due to police activity on the right of way in the Beverly area.
A state police helicopter was also on scene to assist in the search, according to reports, along with the Danvers harbormaster.
