A family member arriving to a house and quick work by Gloucester firefighters saved a single-family home at 35 Presson Point Road with no injuries reported at the time of the fire Thursday afternoon, fire Deputy Chief Andrew McRobb said.
Gloucester Firefighters Local 762 posted to Facebook Thursday that firefighters had knocked down the fire at the home off Concord Street in West Gloucester at 4:32 p.m.
The call came in around 4:29 p.m. and crews, including from the nearby West Gloucester Fire Station, were on scene about four minutes later, McRobb said.
When firefighters arrived, they found a high heat and smoke condition in the basement.
Crews from Fire Headquarters on School Street responded and firefighters encountered a fire in a boiler and hot water heater, he said.
Firefighters extinguished the fire, which was contained to the boiler. Crews then vented the 1 1/2-story, wood-frame Cape of smoke, McRobb said.
The response included Engine 1, Engine 2, Ladder 1, Rescue 1, Cars 2, 3 and 4, plus crews from West Gloucester. There were no injuries and no one was home when the fire started.
A family member showed up, heard the alarm sounding and called the Fire Department. If the relative did not show up, the situation might have been different, McRobb said, saying hard work and quick action from crews saved the house.
