Cumberland County Mayor Allen Foster recently honored Creative Compassion for 35 years of service as a nonprofit housing organization that offers assistance to low-income residents in the Upper Cumberland area.
Creative Compassion’s mission is to address the affordable housing crisis in the Upper Cumberland area by building or maintaining homes for low-income families.
The organization’s projects not only provide necessary housing, but enhance community stability. These efforts add to social and economic development of the area.
Creative Compassion was founded in 1989 by Michael and Judy Smathers. Their shared dream was to provide for the physical, right-now needs of Cumberland County and surrounding areas through housing economic development.
The organization believes community economic development is spurred through quality new building and affordable homeownership opportunities for all. Their main mission is to build affordable, quality homes for low-income homebuyers in Cumberland and surrounding counties.
Since 1989, the organization has built 188 modest, affordable homes.
The organization also offers other services to help with home repairs, utilities, mortgage and rent deposits for veterans.
