Niagara County Clerk Joseph A. Jastrzemski on Tuesday issued his yearly reminder to pistol permit holders to check their permits to see if they are due to recertify with New York State Police. Those with concealed carry permits must now recertify every three years. Those who received a concealed carry permit in 2023, or recertified in 2023, must recertify this year by the date of issuance on their permit.
“As I say every year, regardless of how many of us feel about these recertification provisions, it is the law and I do not want to see any law-abiding pistol permit holder put their permit in jeopardy by failing to recertify,” Jastrzemski said, adding that if anyone from previous years has forgotten to recertify, they should do so immediately.
Pistol permit holders with premises restricted permits must recertify every five years.
Jastrzemski said those who need to re-certify should go to the State Police recertification website at https://troopers.ny.gov/firearms and scroll to pistol permit recertification. Those renewing should have their pistol permit and driver’s license or non-driver identification available before beginning the process, because specific information from these documents will be needed.
“I remind the public that the Niagara County Pistol Permit Office does not have any role in the certification process nor access to the state system, so if you call our office about recertification, we will have to redirect you to the state police website.”
