Cooperstown junior Brayden Sentz finished tied for 12th at the New York State Public High School Athletic Associations golf championships at the Mill Creek Golf Club in Churchville on Sunday, June 7, and Monday, June 8.
Sentz shot a plus 4, 146 on the par-71 course. He had a great first day on Sunday, shooting a minus 3 68, which tied him for second place, one off the lead. He had three birdies on the round and no shots over par.
However, he was seven-over-par for a 78 on Monday. He had just one birdie with six bogeys and a double bogey.
Ryan Liu from Manhasset and Charles Nevin from Friends Academy tied for the state title with a six-under-par 136. Liu shot 70 on Sunday but had the tournament-best round on Monday with a five-under-par 66. Nevin shot a 69 on Sunday and a 67 on Monday. Both players birdied 15 on the final day to break away from the pack and Liu also birdied 16 to force a tie.
Sentz, who was a reserve on Cooperstown’s state championship basketball team this year, has made the state tournament in golf for three straight years. As a sophomore, he placed 30th with a 13-over-par 155. As a freshman, he tied for 63rd with a plus-17 161.
