TOWN OF NIAGARA — With outside construction work done on Amazon’s Town of Niagara fulfillment center, interior work is currently being wrapped up ahead of the planned opening.
“Things are moving along well at our Niagara fulfillment center and we’re excited about the progress,” Amazon spokesperson Marc Heintzman said this week. The major construction work is complete, with tools used inside the facility being installed, like conveyance systems, robotics technology, and material handling equipment, he added.
The massive 3.1 million-square-foot warehouse, located on 216 acres at 8995 Lockport Road in the Town of Niagara, would be the fourth such Amazon facility in New York state, after Rochester, Syracuse, and Staten Island, and among its largest warehouses in the country. Construction for it started in spring 2024, with completion long anticipated to wrap up this year.
It is regarded as a “first mile” fulfillment center, where Amazon orders start their journey through the company’s distribution network of sortation and delivery stations to their destinations.
The five-story building would have enough room for 414 trailer parking stalls, 55 loading docks, and 1,755 parking spaces.
With the site’s leadership team in place, Amazon is currently hiring for a limited number of roles for the site. Job listings on Amazon for Niagara Falls show nearly 30 listings for administrative, HR, site manager, and clerk roles, while other listings include hazmat waste coordinator, onsite medical representative, and injury prevention specialist.
The facility is due to create 1,000 new jobs, with the hired workers coming from both Niagara and Erie counties. Hiring there started earlier this year, with Amazon reportedly hiring 200 people as senior mechanics, robotic technicians, automation engineers, and assistant maintenance managers in its first wave of hires.
The $550 million center did receive nearly $124 million in total tax incentives from the Niagara County Industrial Development Agency in 2022, with the watchdog organization Good Jobs First showing that is the most subsidies Amazon has received for any New York state project, and the 11th most nationwide.
No opening date has been given, with Heintzman saying that can always shift as they get closer to being ready. It was previously reported it would be open in time for Black Friday 2026.
Amazon has more than 50,000 employees across its 12 fulfillment and sortation centers, 32 delivery stations, 33 Whole Foods stores, and four Prime New facilities. The company has invested more than $65 billion in the state, including infrastructure and compensation.
