ANDOVER — The cold weather did not deter the hundreds of people who came out to show their support and gratitude for veterans and their families during the town’s annual Veterans Day service at the Ballardvale Green Tuesday.
The town held its ceremony at 11:11 a.m., signifying the time the armistice was signed at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month to end WWI in 1918. The Veterans Office and Patriotic Holiday Committee organized the service as a way to ensure the town continues to remember and recognize veterans every year.
The ceremony honored the courage and sacrifice of those who have served the country in the six branches of the U.S. armed forces. It began with the flag being raised followed by members of the American Legion Post 8 firing rifles to honor fallen soldiers.
Veterans Services Director Mark Comeiro, who led the Pledge of Allegiance and gave remarks, said the community’s support is always amazing in Andover for any patriotic event.
He said veterans, who make up just a small percentage of any town or city, are appreciative when they see a turnout of people at an event like this, and know they aren’t forgotten.
Veterans were joined by town officials, community members, first responders and state and local dignitaries on the green for a service laced with gratitude and reflection.
The Andover High School marching band also performed patriotic songs during the service, including the songs of the armed forces’ branches.
