Taps on Tuesday
Over the next four weeks, through July 7, Taps on Tuesday will focus on Revolutionary Soldiers in honor of the nation’s 250th Birthday.
The programs are presented at 6 p.m. every Tuesday at Spring Hill Cemetery’s Soldiers Circle by The War Museum, Danville Township and the Ward Hill Lamon Civil War Roundtable.
Featured presenters this week will be Larry Weatherford, Lori Hutt, and Greg Green. Music will be provided by Becky Woodrum and Keith Bouslog. Anita Zoeller will sound Taps.
In the event of rain, the program will be held at the War Museum.
Hospital hosts chocolate sales
The Paris Community Hospital Volunteers is holding a two-day chocolate sale.
The sales will take place Tuesday, June 16, and Wednesday, June 17, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., at Horizon Health’s main campus, 721 E. Court St. in Paris.
Sale items will include gourmet chocolates with sugar-free options, mixed nuts, and more.
Cash and debit/credit cards will be accepted. Chocolate sales support the efforts of the PCH Volunteers, who provide financial assistance to hospital projects and award scholarships to area students who are pursuing healthcare careers.
Danville Library holds karakoe event
The Danville Public Library is holding a “Rise Up” karaoke, a 250th Celebration event from 5-6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, June 17, in the Howard Rutan Meeting Room.

Dino experience at McFerren Park
The Hoopeston Public Library is presenting Dinosaur Encounter with FelleREXpress at 2:30 p.m., Monday, June 22, at the McFerren Park Civic Center in Hoopeston.
It’s a free hand-on dino experience for all ages. Note — The Hoopeston Public Library building will close at 2 p.m. on Monday so that staff can assist with the program.

Lazzell speaks to Lions Club
Angie Lazzell, CEO of Danville Area United Way, will speak to the Danville Lions Club at noon on Thursday, June 28.
The Lions Club meets at Spanky’s Banquet Hall, 409 East Main Street.
Fischer hosts musical improv
The historic Fischer Theatre, 158 N. Vermilion St. in Danville, is hosting “Scriptless in Seattle,” America’s musical improv comedy at 7 p.m. on Friday, July 10.
To describe “Scriptless in Seattle,” think “Whose Line Is It Anyway?” meets live music, audience participation, and nonstop laughs. Every show is created on the spot, meaning no two performances are ever the same.
Admission is $25, but groups of 10 or more tickets are $20 when using the group rate code 10PLUS with purchasing tickets.

VCCD hosts trailblazers camp
The Vermilion County Conservation District is inviting teenagers ages 14-18 years to register for a new summer camp program, Trailblazers, that will be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Wednesday, July 8 at Forest Glen Preserve.
The camp will offer a variety of activities that encourage a deeper appreciation for the natural world. Teens looking for an outdoor adventure will take guided hikes through scenic trails, immersive creek walks that explore local ecosystems, and fire-building instruction that teaches outdoor survival skills in a safe, supervised environment.

Covington VFW hosts fish fry
The Fountain County VFW Post No. 2395 Auxiliary is hosting a fish fry from 5-7 p.m. (Eastern) on Friday, June 19 at their post, located at 1212 Liberty Street in Covington, Ind.
The menu includes fish, fries, baked beans, cole slaw and tea. Cost is $15 for the public and $12 for veterans, dine in or carry out.
Proceeds are used to support community and post activities as well as maintain the post.
VCCD hosts art exhibit
The Vermilion County Conservation District is pleased to host the artwork of Mike Camp from 5-7 p.m. on Thursday, June 18, at the Kennekuk Education Center, 22296 Henning Road in Danville.
Mike Camp is a life-long resident of Vermilion County, growing up on a farm on the banks of the Middle Fork River. An outdoorsman by both inclination and the necessities of farm work, he has spent his life focused on the natural world. He started painting with acrylics three years ago after a chance meeting with Lori Learnard, former art instructor from Oakwood High School. With her able assistance and friendship, he has really learned to enjoy painting. Mike paints what he knows: horses, cattle, wildlife, and landscapes, especially prairies and the Great Plains. Most of his paintings are inspired by personal experiences.
This open house is open to the public with Mike available for comments and questions about his work. Other viewing times are available by appointment by calling 217-442-1691.
Museum hosts quilt show
The Vermilion County Museum Society, 116 N. Gilbert Street, Danville, will be accepting quilted items until Friday, June 19, for the 43rd Annual Midwest Heritage Quilt Show, sponsored by Threads of Time Creative Sewing & Retreat Center in Danville.
Entries are accepted in the following categories: bed quilts: baby/child, appliqué, pieced, mixed/other, antique; wall hanging (entered with a permanent or temporary 3-inch sleeve attached); antique (finished prior to 1924), clothing/purses; household; lap quilts (not for use on a bed or as a wall hanging); machine embroidery; young quilt maker (18 or under); panels.
There is a $5 fee for each entry, which includes a critique and participants may enter a maximum of two quilts. The quilts should be brought to the Museum during regular hours, Tuesday-Saturday 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. Quilts entered in last year’s competition are ineligible. Entries will be exhibited at the Museum throughout the month of July.

Westville Library reading program
The Westville Library, 233 S. State St. in Westville, is holding a Catch the Reading Wave Summer Reading Program during the week of June 22-26. Kindergartners through second grade will be at 10 a.m. while third grade to sixth grade will be at 2 p.m.

Foodmobile stops in Vermilion County
The Eastern Illinois Foodbank announces the “Foodmobile” will be distributing food to local families facing food insecurity in Vermilion County this month.
On Tuesday, June 23, the Foodmobile will make stops in Rossville and Ridge Farm.
The distribution is part of the Foodbank’s Foodmobile Program, a system of mobile food pantries designed to help bring nutritious food to rural or underserved areas.
The first stop on June 23 will be at Christman Park in Rossville from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. followed by a stop in Ward Park in Ridge Farm from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.

Danville Library hosts “Mrs. Kate”

VCCD holds workshop on Dragonflies
DANVILLE — Kennekuk County Park, located at 22296 Henning Road in Danville, is hosting an Illinois Department of Natural Resources ENTICE workshop, Illinois Dragonflies, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, June 26.
Rusty snaketail, prince baskettail, and eastern amberwing all have one thing in common — being an Illinois dragonfly. Take part in field work and lab studies as we discuss the identification, life history, and behaviors of these fascinating invertebrates, both as aquatic nymphs and as adults. This workshop is for grades 6 to 10 but can be adapted for other grades.

This workshop is offered through the ENTICE (Environment and Nature Training Institute for Conservation Education) for the Illinois Department of Natural Resources (IDNR). ENTICE classes are professional development workshops for educators, both formal and nonformal, sponsored by the IDNR. Preservice teachers welcome. Supplemental classroom resources will be provided. Illinois Extension and OSF offer diabetes support
Illinois Extension and OSF Healthcare have joined together for a monthly diabetes support group designed for individual living with diabetes and their caregivers.
These sessions will be held on the second Tuesday of every month from 10 to 11 a.m. at the Danville Public Library, 319 N. Vermilion St. in Danville. The next session is set for July 7 and the final session will be Dec. 8.
Each session will include a short educational component and open discussion, where participants may share their experiences, discuss their successes and challenges, and learn from one another.
Topics are not preset and will be guided on participant interests and needs. Participants will receive a SmartMeals meal kit from OSF.

Horizon Health hosts EMT class
Horizon Health is now accepting registration for an EMT-Basic certification course this fall.
The 20-week course will take place Mondays and Thursdays, from 5 to 9 pm, beginning September 14. Classes will take place at the Horizon Health Education Center, located at 15197 US Highway 150, in Paris.
The course fee is $1,000, which includes a student polo shirt for clinical hours, student workbook, a drug screen, and a background check. This fee will also cover the applicant’s first exam attempt through the National Registry. Applicants will be considered on a first-come, first-served basis.
Internet access is required, as this is a hybrid course. Access to Jones & Bartlett Learning and all course materials are provided. CPR certification is included in the course.
Applicants will be screened prior to being accepted into the class, which may include a brief meeting or phone interview. They cannot be a convicted felon and must be up to date on immunizations prior to the start of class. Accepted applicants will be notified.
