Turtle Run hosts DARE golf outing
The 34th Annual Vermilion County D.A.R.E. Golf Scramble is set for noon, today at Turtle Run Golf Club, 332 E. Liberty Lane in Danville.
Cost to enter the four-man scramble is $85 per team member or and the cost for Turtle Run members is $70 per player.
In addition to 18 holes of golf, the entry includes the use of a golf cart and lunch at 11 a.m. Sponsorships are also available, a scoreboard sponsorship costs $25, a hole sponsorship costs $50 and a corporate sponsorship, which includes team, cart and hole sponsorship, is $500.

Fire, police charity softball game set
The 16th Annual Finest vs. Bravest Charity Softball Game between the Danville Police Union and the Danville Fire Union is 5 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 15 at Danville Stadium, 610 Highland Blvd. in Danville.
Admission is free, but donations will be accepted at the door and all proceeds will be donated. Opening ceremonies begin at 4 p.m.

Songer Poker Run set for Saturday
The Sparky Songer Memorial Poker Run is set for 9:30 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 15 starting at the Vermilion County War Museum, 307 N. Vermilion St.
All vehicles are welcomes. The cost is $20 per rider/driver and $5 per passenger. Proceeds benefit the Vermilion County War Museum.
The run will end at the Westville American Legion, 115 S. State St. in Westville. A 50/50 raffle and other raffle baskets will be drawn at that time.

Taps on Tuesday
This week’s Taps on Tuesday program will be a continuation of last week’s focus on the four siege mortars (artillery pieces) in the Soldiers Circle at Spring Hill Cemetery.

CRIS, YMCA offer free fitness classes
DANVILLE — CRIS Healthy Aging in collaboration with the YMCA of Danville is offering Fit & Strong! falls prevention classes.
Classes will be held from 10-11:30 a.m. every Tuesday and Thursday through Nov. 5 at the YMCA of Danville, 1111 N. Vermilion Street.
There are 24 sessions, each lasting 90 minutes, with 60 minutes of exercise and 30 minutes of discussion and education. Join us for warmups, aerobics, weightlifting, cool downs, and a great time.

Hoopeston Library salutes dog month
August is National Dog Month and Hoopeston Public Library is celebrating these “dog days” with some fun activities and a donation drive for the Hoopeston Animal Rescue Team (HART).
During August, bring in, email or share a picture of your dog to the library’s Facebook or Instagram pages, and you and your dog will each receive a small treat. All submitted dog photos will be on display near the upstairs main desk.

Horizon hosts educational events
Horizon Health is offering a free educational program about treatment options for bladder and bowel conditions through its “Take Back Control” event.
Individuals can participate in an in-person lunch and learn event from noon to 1 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 19 at the Horizon Health Education Center, 15197 U.S. Highway 150, Paris. A complimentary lunch will be provided.
Dr. Michael Shanks, a urologist at Horizon Health, will discuss the signs, symptoms, and treatment options for overactive bladder, urinary retention, and bowel incontinence. Participants will learn about these common conditions, explore the latest treatment options, and have the opportunity to ask questions.

St. James UMC hosts blood drive
ImpactLife is hosting a blood drive from 3-6 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 20 in its Bloodmobile, which will be parked at St. James United Methodist Church, 504 N. Vermilion St. in Danville.
Appointments, which are requested, to donate blood can be scheduled by calling ImpactLife at 800-747-5401 or on its website www.bloodcenter.org, using the code 70321. The donation process takes 45 minutes to one hour.
All donors will receive ImpactLife Donor Rewards: choice of electronic gift card, points to use in the ImpactLife Donor Rewards Store, or the option to contribute an equivalent value to a nonprofit through the blood center’s “Good Giving” initiative.
Potential donors must be at least 17 years old (16 with a parental permission form available through www.bloodcenter.org) and weigh more than 110 pounds. A photo ID is required to donate. Covington VFW holds fish fry
The Fountain County VFW Post No. 2395 Auxiliary is hosting a fish fry from 5-7 p.m. (Eastern) on Friday, Aug. 21 at their post, 1212 Liberty Street in Covington, Ind.
The menu includes fish, fries, baked beans, slaw and tea. Cost is $15 for the public and $12 for veterans, dine in or carry out.
Proceeds are used to support community and post activities as well as maintain the post, while proceeds for a 50/50 drawing will go toward purchasing more chairs for the meeting room.

With the 2026 school year starting, Project Success and the United Way of the Danville Area are hosting a Anti-Violence Back-to-School Summit on Saturday, Aug. 22 at the David S. Palmer Arena, 100 W. Main St.

Foodmobile stops in Vermilion County
The Eastern Illinois Foodbank announces the “Foodmobile” will be distributing food to local families facing food insecurity in Vermilion County this month. On Tuesday, Aug. 25, the Foodmobile will make stops in Rossville and Ridge Farm. The distribution is part of the Foodbank’s Foodmobile Program, a system of mobile food pantries designed to help bring nutritious food to rural or underserved areas.
The first stop on Aug. 25 will be at Christman Park in Rossville from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. followed by a stop in Ward Park in Ridge Farm from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.

Kiwanis Pancake Day set
The 76th Annual Kiwanis Pancake and Sausage Day is set for Thursday, Aug. 27 at the David S. Palmer Arena in Danville.

Illinois Extension and OSF offer diabetes support
Illinois Extension and OSF Healthcare have joined together for a monthly diabetes support group designed for individual living with diabetes and their caregivers.
These sessions will be held on the second Tuesday of every month from 10 to 11 a.m. at the Danville Public Library, 319 N. Vermilion St. in Danville. The next session is set for Sept. 8 and the final session will be Dec. 8.
Each session will include a short educational component and open discussion, where participants may share their experiences, discuss their successes and challenges, and learn from one another.
Topics are not preset and will be guided on participant interests and needs. Participants will receive a SmartMeals meal kit from OSF.

Art League hosts special exhibit
The Danville Art League is reflecting on the people, places and moments that have defined Vermilion County, celebrating its 200th Anniversary, and the United States, celebrating its 250th Anniversary.
“A Walk Through the History of the Art League,” is an exhibit currently on display at the Danville Art League, 320 N. Franklin Street in Danville.

Horizon Health hosts EMT class
Horizon Health is now accepting registration for an EMT-Basic certification course this fall.
The 20-week course will take place Mondays and Thursdays, from 5 to 9 pm, beginning September 14. Classes will take place at the Horizon Health Education Center, located at 15197 US Highway 150, in Paris.
The course fee is $1,000, which includes a student polo shirt for clinical hours, student workbook, a drug screen, and a background check. This fee will also cover the applicant’s first exam attempt through the National Registry. Applicants will be considered on a first-come, first-served basis.
Internet access is required, as this is a hybrid course. Access to Jones & Bartlett Learning and all course materials are provided. CPR certification is included in the course.
Applicants will be screened prior to being accepted into the class, which may include a brief meeting or phone interview. They cannot be a convicted felon and must be up to date on immunizations prior to the start of class. Accepted applicants will be notified.

River to Rail Ride set for Sept. 12
The Vermilion County Conservation District is hosting the River to Rail Ride on Saturday, Sept. 12 at Kennekuk County Park, 22296 Henning Road in Danville.
The ride has five different lengths (7.5, 30, 37, 51 and 63 miles) with a scenic route that takes you on a loop around the Middle Fork River with two support and gear (SAG) stops and tree-shaded roads in Kickapoo State Park before returning to Kennekuk.
The cost for registration is $45 for those 17 and older and $25 for those 16 and younger on the routes that leave Kennekuk. For the 7.5-mile route that stays within the park, cost is $30 for 17 and older and $10 for 16 and younger. All riders 16 and younger must ride with a registered adult.
Individual registering by Thursday, Aug. 27 will receive a t-shirt in their requested size. No shirt for registrations after Aug. 27.
