After two tough seasons, former Phillips Academy star and two-time Eagle-Tribune Player of the Year Dallion Johnson of Bradford made a major splash at Indiana University’s famed Assembly Hall parquet floor
In his debut for Florida Gulf Coast University, Johnson scored 17 points and added a pair of rebounds, a pair of assists and a steal as the Eagles opened their season with a 69-63 loss to Indiana University.
Johnson previously played for Penn State. There, he was a two-time Academic All-Big-Ten selection. He appeared in 60 games over three seasons, starting 14 as a sophomore.
While at Phillips Academy, Johnson was named to the USA Today All-USA team, was the 2020 Gatorade Massachusetts Player of the Year, broke the program’s record scoring 1,600 points and was a three-time ALL-NEPSAC selection and a four-time Eagle-Tribune All-Star selection.
Stanford opened its season on Monday night with an 88-79 win over California State University. Freshman Aidan Cammann, a 6-foot-10, 225-pound center/forward who starred at Andover High and did a PG year at Brewster Academy, did not appear in the game.
Cammann came in as the No. 44 ranked center in the country, and head coach Jerod Haase is thrilled to have him onboard.
“Adding a student-athlete of Aidan’s caliber is a home run. On the court, Aidan is a super skilled forward. He has a tremendous feel for the game on both sides of the floor, and he will only continue to improve throughout his college career. Off the court, Aidan is equally as impressive and will thrive in this environment.”
Moving to Division 2, this Saturday, former Lawrence High star Tobi Ongubare and his Millersville teammates will open the season on Saturday home against Livingstone. Ongubare, who moved to the United States from Ireland back in 2021, averaged 12.5 points and 14.5 rebounds for Lawrence High. He was a two-time MVC All-Conference and two-time Eagle-Tribune All-Star selection.
Also of Lawrence, Luis Reynoso recorded a team-high 15 points and added 13 rebounds for his second double-double in as many games to help the No. 5 NJCAA nationally ranked Northern Essex Community College team improve to 2-0 on the season with a win over Queensborough Community College.
LaChance impressive for BU
Freshman Shane LaChance of Andover has been impressive thus far for the Boston University men’s hockey team. He recently registered back-to-back assist games in a two-game series with North Dakota. On the season, he has two goals and three assists.
Connor Sweeney of North Andover netted a goal to help UNH defeat Northeastern, 4-1.
Defenseman Sean Corliss, of North Andover, has a goal and an assist, to help Assumption get off to a strong 3-1 start.
Lyons ignites PSU Swim team
Brady Lyons of Methuen was part of the winning 200-freestyle relay (1:40.55) to help Plymouth State defeat Regis College 134-87. Earlier in a win over Colby-Sawyer, he was second in the 50-freestyle at 25.64.
Senior Will Granger of Andover, finished second in the 200-butterfly with a time of 2:19.24 to help St. Michael’s easily get past Keene State, 179-52.
Baker has career day on the gridiron
Senior Kyle Baker of Pelham, N.H., registered career highs of eight catches and 80 receiving yards as Plymouth State University toppled Massachusetts Maritime Academy, 31-21, in a Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) football game at Panther Field on Saturday.
After Plymouth State came up with a fumble recovery late in the game, Baker had five catches on the ensuing 13-play, 69-yard drive, including his TD. On fourth-and-two from the Mass. Maritime 20-yard line, Baker got open along the right sideline, then made a move around a defender to get into the end zone for the game winner. For his efforts, Baker was honored by the Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) with weekly recognition.
Also from that game, North Andover resident Seth DiSalvo booted a 21-yard field goal and linebacker Evan Wilson had six tackles. On the season, Baker leads the team with 23 catches for 266 yards with two scores, and Wilson also leads the team with a combined 86 tackles, 3 sacks and two forced fumbles.
Two weeks ago, when PSU stunned Westfield State, 20-19, senior defensive lineman Mike Terrazzano of Pelham, blocked a PAT attempt, which was instrumental in the final score. On the season, he has a combined 17 tackles.
In that same game, Budder Ferreira of Haverhill had a big game for Westfield State with seven solo tackles and three assisted tackles.
The No. 19 nationally ranked Endicott (7-1) defeated Husson, 23-13. Former Central Catholic star Anthony Caggianelli of Pelham punched home his 21st career rushing touchdown, which ranks second all-time in program history, in the third quarter. He finished the game with 23 rushes for 99 yards. On the season, he leads the team with 115 rushing attempts for 483 yards as well as scoring nine touchdowns.
North Andover resident Kaleb Moody has continued his strong season as a safety for Harvard. He had a big game with four solo tackles, four additional assisted tackles, a sack and a forced fumble to help the No. 23 ranked Crimson Tide improve to 6-1 with a 17-9 win over Dartmouth.
Senior linebacker Mark Kassis of Central Catholic and Salem, N.H., finished with five solo tackles and assisted on two others as Colby College fell to Hamilton College, 17-6, back on Oct. 21.
In Bridgewater State’s 21-7 win over Framingham State, sophomore Victor Martinez had a big day defensively, finishing with six total tackles, including one for a loss, and a forced fumble. On the season, he has 40 combined tackles.
Local runners compete at league championship meets
At the NE-10 Championships, former Phillips Academy star Sam Capobianco finished sixth with an an 8K time of 25:31.80 to help Bentley University finish fourth at the Northeast-10 Men’s Cross Country Championships. After that, Capobianco was one of two runners from the East Region to qualify for the NCAA Division 2 Championship meet, finishing 12th with a 10K time of 31:40.33 to leading the Falcons to a fifth place finish as a team.
Teammate Matt Chico of North Andover, finished 29th overall at 26:54.40 at the NE-10 Championship Meet.
At the same meet, Liam Doherty of Methuen, finished 67th at 28:01.8 to help Franklin Pierce finish second as a team and Josh Nottebart of Pelham, N.H. finished 60th overall at 27:50.7.
At the Commonwealth Coast Conference Championship Meet, Andrew Lauzon of North Andover finished 40th overall with an 8K time of 29:40.1, helping the team finish fourth.
At the Northeast Conference Championships, Merrimack finished second as a team and were helped by Windham, N.H., resident Trey Gonzalez, who finished 17th overall with an 8K time of 26:28.90.
At the Liberty League Championship Meet, Andover’s Matt Serrano finished 24th overall with a 5,500 meter time of 26:01.1 to help St. Lawrence to a third place finish.
At the NESCAC League Small School Championships, sophomore Luke Brennan of Derry, N.H., finished 41st overall with a time of 26:40.60 to help Tufts finish third.
At the NESCAC Large School race, Williams captured the championship title. Former Phillips Academy star Chris Ratcliffe finished 22nd with an 8K time of 26:04.30.
Freshman Trip Williams of Pelham, finished 45th overall with a time of 28:15.9 to help WPI finish second at the NEWMAC Championship Meet.
At the GNAC Championships, Cameron Ingram of Plaistow, N.H., finished 30th overall with a time of 32.49.2 to help lead Rivier College.
Zarka finds the back of the net
Christian Zarka, of Derry, scored his second goal of the season for Bentley (7-5-2) in a 6-3 win over New Haven.
Anthony Previte of Andover, picked up two assists each in back-to-back games to help WPI (8-3-6) beat both Springfield and Clark by the same 3-1 scores.
Freshman Marco Dos Santos, of Windham, has picked up assists in back-to-back games for Boston College (3-8-5). He had the helper in the 2-1 loss to Stonehill and also figured in the lone goal in the 1-1 tie with Syracuse.
Goalie Ethan Donahue, of Methuen, has been on a hot streak as of late, helping Regis College win five of its last seven games. He posted shutouts over Anna Maria and Mitchell and currently has a 1.76 GAA.
Madison Hawkins of Haverhill, picked up two wins as the goalie for Fitchburg State, including making nine saves in a win over Salem State.
