BLUE SPRINGS, MO. — Minnesota State had four players score under par Sunday to win the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference men’s golf championship.
The Mavericks shot 276 in the final round to finish the 54-hole tournament at 858, defeating Winona State by 23 strokes. It’s the Mavericks’ first Northern Sun championship since 2017-18 and the lowest three-round total in tournament history.
Max Brud won the tournament by shooting two-under-par 70, giving him a three-day total of 212 (69-73-70). Teammate Ben Laffen shot the low round on Sunday and finished second at 213 (72-74-67). Karson Patten took third at 215 (72-74-69), while Alex Bradley was tied for fifth bat 218 (73-75-70).
Baseball: Ryan Friedges hit a three-run homer in an eight-run eighth inning as the Mavericks defeated Minnesota Crookston 8-5 in a Northern Sun game at Bowyer Field.
Lincoln Berry also had a two-run double in the rally, and Ryan Wickman and Adam Weed each had an RBI. Seven of the eight runs were unearned.
Spencer Wright gave up one hit with four strikeouts in two innings of relief to get the win.
Minnesota State (25-14, 21-8 in Northern Sun) plays Northwestern College on Tuesday at Bowyer Field.
Softball: The Mavericks split a Northern Sun doubleheader with Wayne State at The Diamond, winning 5-1 in the first game and losing 5-2 in the second.
Courtney Kessler had three RBIs in the opener. Ellie Tallman and Kylie Sullivan each had two hits. McKayla Armbruster pitched a complete game, allowing one unearned run on four hits with six strikeouts.
In the second game, Izzy Hycnar had two hits and two RBIs, and Tallman had three hits and scored a run. Maddie Helin and Marina Carter each had two hits.
Only one of Wayne State’s runs was earned as the Mavericks made four errors.
Minnesota State (37-13, 17-7) plays at Southwest Minnesota State on Saturday.
Gustavus Adolphus
Men’s golf: The Gusties finished fourth at the 14-team Bobby Krig Invitational, which wrapped up at Le Sueur Country Club. The Gusties totaled a 602 (296-306), which was 21 strokes behind St. John’s.
Pelayo Perez Crespo tied for 10th at 147 (71-76), and Tommy Hiniker was tied for 14th at 148 (73-75). Jack Reinardy (78-78) and Chris Gutuza (74-82) tied for 31st at 156.
Gustavus will play at the St. John’s Invitational on Saturday and Sunday at the Monticello Country Club.
Women’s golf: Gustavus shot 324 in Sunday’s final round and took third at the Bethel Rumble at the Ridge, held at Oneka Ridge Golf Course in White Bear Lake.
St. Benedict won the tournament at 638, edging Macalester by three strokes.
Annika Reierson tied for second at 152 (76-76), while Emily Kolb tied for 10th at 162 (81-81), Riley Zebroski tied for 18th at 166 (83-83), and Lauren Hubbart tied for 21st at 168 (84-84).
Bethany Lutheran
Men’s golf: The Vikings shot 705 and finished 14th at the Bobby Krig Invitational at Le Sueur Country Club.
Jake Swanson tied for 61st at 166 (86-80), while Teien Murphy placed 77th at 177 (92-85). Arturo Beltran was 78th at 178 (87-91), and Eli Wetzel was tied for 80 at 184 (99-85).
