MANKATO — Tanner Gaffey knocked off No. 10-ranked Jacob Dykes in the 285-pound match, highlighting Minnesota State’s 30-15 victory over Southwest Minnesota State in a Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference wrestling match Saturday at Bresnan Arena.
Gaffey had an escape and takedown in the final seconds to win 5-2.
Andrew Weiss (133 pounds), Trayton Anderson (141), Drake Hayward (174) and Gavin Christoffersen (184) each won by fall for Minnesota State. Kole Marko won a 13-4 major decision at 165.
The Mavericks (5-3, 2-3 in Northern Sun) compete against Upper Iowa on Sunday at Fayette, Iowa.
Men’s basketball: Kyreese Willingham made four free throws in the final seconds to help No. 2 Minnesota State defeat Sioux Falls 70-65 in a Northern Sun game at Sioux Falls, South Dakota.
The Mavericks fell behind early, making just 3 of the first 14 shots, and still trailed 34-27 at halftime. Minnesota State opened the second half with a 19-3 run, before the Cougars rallied, leading 64-60 with 3:22 to play. The game was tied at 66 when Malik Willingham put the Mavericks back on top with a layup with 46 seconds remaining, and Kyreese Willingham iced the victory with free throws.
Malik Willingham scored 25 points and five assists, and Kyreese Willingham had 22 points and seven rebounds. Dylan Peeters had nine points and six rebounds.
The Mavericks shot 34.8% from the field in the first half and 51.2% in the second half. Sioux Falls had a 39-28 advantage in rebounding.
Minnesota State (21-2, 15-2 in Northern Sun) plays Wayne State on Friday and Augustana on Saturday at Bresnan Arena.
Women’s basketball: No. 22 Minnesota State outscored Sioux Falls 42-20 in the second half to win 82-55 in a Northern Sun road game. The Mavericks have won 17 consecutive games, which ties the team record.
Natalie Bremer led the Mavericks, scoring 20 points for the sixth time this season to go with five rebounds and two steals. Hannah Herzig finished with 16 points, six rebounds, five assists and three steals, and Destinee Bursch had 15 points and three steals. Ava Stier had 11 rebounds and three steals.
The Mavericks (19-4, 16-1) play at home Friday against Wayne State and Saturday against Augustana.
Softball: The Mavericks split a pair of games at the MSU Invitational, losing 6-2 to Lewis and winning 2-1 against Emporia State at the Maverick All-Sports Dome.
Maddie Oetzmann took the loss against Lewis, giving up one earned run on seven hits in three innings. Courtney Baxter’s double was the Mavericks’ only hit, with two runs scoring on an error.
McKayla Armbruster pitched a complete game against Emporia State, allowing one earned run with nine strikeouts. Marina Carter had an RBI, and Izzy Hycnar had an RBI double in the sixth inning for the game-winner.
Gianna Lara had two hits.
Minnesota State (3-1) closes the tournament Sunday with games again Emporia State at 9 a.m. and Southwest Minnesota State at 1:30 p.m.
Women’s hockey: Seventh-ranked Minnesota Duluth scored twice on the power play to defeat Minnesota 2-1 in a WCHA game at Duluth.
Sydney Langseth scored her 12th goal of the season in the third period, assisted by Jamie Nelson and Jenessa Gazdik.
Minnesota State (10-19-0, 4-18-0) hosts Ohio State on Friday and Saturday at Mayo Clinic Health System Event Center.
Gustavus Adolphus
Men’s basketball: Wyatt Olson had 16 points and 11 rebounds in the Gusties’ 80-68 MIAC loss to Bethel at Arden Hills.
Evan Wieker added 15 points and nine rebounds, while Brady Kienitz and Spencer Swanson each scored 10 points.
The Gusties shot 38.9% from the field, their second-lowest mark of the season.
Gustavus (10-9, 9-5) hosts Macalester on Monday.
Women’s basketball: No. 5-ranked Gustavus won its 11th consecutive game, defeating Bethel 81-57 in an MIAC game at Arden Hills.
The Gusties shot 54% from the field and made 22 of 25 free throws.
Emma Kniefel led the offense with 20 points on 8-of-10 shooting, and Syd Hauger added 19 points, making 7 of 11 shots. Izzy Quick had 12 points and six rebounds.
Gustavus continues its road trip Monday night at Macalester.
Women’s hockey: Molly McHugh had a pair of assists as the Gusties completed the MIAC sweep of second-place Hamline, winning 3-1 at Don Roberts Ice Rink.
Hannah Gray, Hailey Holland and Macy Janssen each scored a goal for Gustavus.
Katie McCoy made 16 saves. Gustavus had 18 shots on goal.
The Gusties (16-4, 13-1) play Concordia on Friday and Saturday at Moorhead.
Men’s tennis: Dominik Knutson and Jack Bergmeyer each won a singles match for Gustavus in a 4-3 loss to North Dakota at Grand Forks, North Dakota.
The Gusties also won the doubles point as Marco Siviero and Josh Christensen won at No. 1 and Gage Gohl and Tyler Haddorff won at No. 2.
Gustavus will play as a split squad Saturday, hosting Wisconsin-Eau Claire and playing Creighton.
Men’s hockey: The Gusties ended a seven-game losing streak with a 5-2 MIAC victory over Hamline at St. Paul.
Marc Fletemeyer scored two goals, and Jac Triemert, Connor Mahony and Artem Korolev each scored one.
Jackson Hjelle picked up the win in goal with 36 saves, while Gustavus had 41 shots on goal.
Gustavus (8-11-2, 3-8-1) will host Concordia on Friday and Saturday at Don Roberts Ice Rink.

Women’s basketball: Juliana Ewald scored 14 points for the Vikings in a 69-62 Upper Midwest Athletic Conference loss to Minnesota Morris at the Sports & Fitness Center.
Aubrea Kor added 13 points, followed by Lexiss Trygg with 12 points and Gianna Klarenbeek with 11 points. Ewald, Trygg and Kor each had eight rebounds, and Kor made four steals.
Bethany (5-16, 5-5 in UMAC) plays at Northwestern on Friday.
Men’s basketball: Xavier Patterson scored 29 points as the Vikings defeated Minnesota Morris 86-79 in a UMAC game at the Sports & Fitness Center.
Patterson was 10 of 14 from the field and 8 of 9 on free throws, going over the 1,000-point mark for his career.
Drew Sagedahl had 19 points, and Jax Madson scored 13 points. Hunter Nielsen had nine points, 12 rebounds and four blocked shots, and Mason Ackley had 11 rebounds.
Bethany (18-3, 10-0) plays at Northwestern on Friday. The Vikings clinched a share of the UMAC title, needing one win in the final four games to win it outright.
