Minnesota State sophomore Taylor Otremba was named the WCHA Forward of the Week on Monday, coming off a four-point performance in a home sweep of Bemidji State on Friday and Saturday.
It’s first first forward of the week for Otremba, who was named WCHA Rookie of the week three times and Rookie of the Month once last season.
Otremba registered her third multi-goal game of the season, and fourth of her career, in Friday’s 4-0 victory, and she had an assist in Saturday’s 5-2 win that locked up the No. 6 seed for the WCHA tournament.
Otremba is fourth on the team with eight goals and third with 13 assists.
Minnesota State (12-21-0, 6-20-0 in WCHA) finishes the regular season with a home-and-home series against St. Thomas, beginning Friday at Mayo Clinic Health System Event Center.
Track and field stars
For the fifth straight week, Minnesota State swept the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference awards for women’s track and field.
Freshman Esaba Okwaramoi was named the track athlete of the week, and freshman Ghada Hamdani was named the field athlete of the week for their performances at the Maverick Invitational on Friday.
Okwaramoi won the 60-meter hurdles with a personal-best time of 8.64 seconds, which ranks 18th in Division II this season. Hamdani set a meet record with a first-place triple jump of 41-feet-2 1/4, which ranks sixth in Division II.
For the men’s track and field, Minnesota State sophomore Jalen McGee was named the field athlete of the week after winning the long jump at 24-7 1/2 on Friday. The jump ranks fifth in program history and fifth in Division II. He also placed third in the triple jump at 46-5 1/2.
Minnesota State hosts the Northern Sun Indoor Championships on Friday and Saturday at Myers Field House.
Gusties’ award winners
Gustavus Adolphus’ Spencer Swanson, Emma Kniefel and Sophia Coltvet all received MIAC players of the week honors Monday.
Swanson averaged 16.3 points and 9.3 rebounds in two men’s basketball games last week. He had his ninth double-double of the season with 13 points and 12 rebounds against St. Mary’s.
Kniefel helped the women’s basketball team claim its second consecutive MIAC regular-season championship last week. She averaged 12.6 points and 4.0 rebounds in three games.
Coltvet, a defenseman, totaled three points in a pair of shutouts against St. Olaf. She had her second consecutive two-goal game Friday, and she also had an assist.
