SARANAC — Noble High School (Me.) racked up 338 points on Saturday to defend its team championship in the Annual Nate Wood Memorial Wrestling Tournament, hosted by Saranac Central School.
The host Spartans finished second for the second year in a row with 292 points and AuSable Valley took third with 211. Peru and Malone’s Franklin Academy also competed in the eight-team field.
Colby Roesler, Teegan Smith and Dylan Cogswell all won their weight classes to lead the way for the Spartans.
“This was the first time most of the wrestlers were able to get on the mat,” Saranac coach Heath Smith said. “We have a young and inexperienced team, but they showed a lot of heart and dedication. Some of the young wrestlers had a great day.
“At 101, freshman Colby Roesler won his weight class for the second time; eighth-grader Teegan Smith went 4-0 as a first-time varsity wrestler and won his weight class at 116; and Dylan Cogswell, at 285, won his second Nate Wood title in the last three years by going 4-0 and defeating the wrestler who beat him last year.”
The Patriots also had three individual champions in Dom Lapier (160), Jesse Snow (170) and Nate Rondeau (215).
Chosen as Most Outstanding Wrestler in the light weights was Noble’s Brady Ouellette at 131 pounds. And Most Outstanding Wrestler in the heavy weights was Saranac’s Cogswell at 285.
The Nate Wood Award went to Saranac’s Alex Clancy, who finished second at 145.
