CLEVELAND — Cleveland Police Chief Randall Tiegs has resigned after 26 years leading the department.
Tiegs announced the resignation in a Facebook post Monday, thanking the Le Sueur County city of about 750 residents for its support during his tenure. His final day will be June 19.
“It is with mixed emotions that I post this however I want to let the community of Cleveland know that I have submitted my letter of resignation,” he wrote in the Facebook post, which garnered over a hundred comments from community members.
Tiegs did not respond to The Free Press’ requests for comment. His resignation reportedly follows a dispute over hiring practices after a new city policy required him to share hiring decisions with two City Council members rather than making those elections independently, according to KEYC reports Wednesday.
Le Sueur County News reported that following Tiegs’ resignation submission an emergency meeting was called to discuss next steps, including the process to hire a successor. Part-time officer Todd Dorn subsequently resigned and the community service officer position, held by Mike Kollos, was reportedly dissolved.
Following Tiegs’ departure, the Le Sueur County Sheriff’s Office will patrol the city until a replacement chief is hired.
