The Clarkrange High School girls have gone 1-1 over the second and third rounds of the Watertown Christmas Tournament.
The Lady Buffaloes lost their first game in a 54-46 decision to host Watertown, but rallied to take down Battle Ground Academy 49-46 in the second round of play.
Clarkrange got off to a good start in its game with Watertown. The Lady Buffaloes got baskets from Lydia Phillips and Sophia Sitton and took a 15-12 lead after the first period.
Watertown came fighting back and took a 23-22 advantage into the locker room at halftime. Dailey Hight led the charge for the Lady Tigers. She got help from Molly Followill and Izzie Burns.
Clarkrange’s offense struggled in the third quarter. The Lady Buffaloes could manage only 11 points, while Watertown began to pull away.
CHS got buckets from Stella Byers, Ellie Gunter and Katelyn Cottle, but the Lady Tigers were highlighted by baskets from Hight and Followill and Watertown led 38-33 heading into the fourth period.
Phillips led Clarkrange in scoring with 21 points. Sitton scored 10, while Gunter had seven. Cottle and Byers scored four each.
Hight led Watertown with 11 points, while Followill had 10. Burns contributed eight in the win.
Lady Buffaloes get back on winning track against BGA
The Clarkrange Lady Buffaloes got back on the winning track earlier this week with an impressive victory over powerhouse Battle Ground Academy.
The Lady Buffaloes came out of the gates shooting against BGA, and it is a good thing they did because BGA never stopped fighting.
Clarkrange got baskets from Ellie Gunter and Lydia Phillips early in the game to help CHS take a 17-13 lead after the first eight minutes of action. BGA was supported by back to back jumpers by Aubrey Bates.
The Lady Buffaloes tried to pull away after baskets by Sophia Sitton and Katelyn Cottle, but Battle Ground came back with baskets from Khloe Burton and Tay Stovel to trail 29-26 heading into halftime.
Defense was the name of the game in the third quarter. Clarkrange could manage only seven points in the period, while Battle Ground could manage only eight. CHS took a 36-34 lead into the final period of play.
Lydia Phillips scored 26 points to lead Clarkrange in scoring with 26 points. Gunter added 11, and Sitton scored seven. Katelyn Cottle tallied three points, and Callie Upchurch had two.
Bates and Kate Northam led BGA with 12 points each. Burton and Stovel had nine a piece.
Clarkrange, 8-9 on the year, is scheduled to be back on the court Jan. 6 when Jackson County visits. Tipoff is set for 6 p.m.
Clarange boys down
Kingston, 53-49
The Clarkrange boys jumped on top of Kingston early in their game and never let up as the Buffaloes knocked out Kingston 53-49 earlier this week in the first round of the Harriman Christmas Tournament.
Clarkrange got big baskets from Mason McWhirter, JD Bristol and Bryton Swallows to rush out to a 29-22 lead at the intermission. However, the score was tied at 13-13 after the first eight minutes, thanks to the shooting of Aiden O’Leary and Avery Belde.
CHS stayed on top of things in the second half. The Buffaloes got scoring from Tristan Taylor and Braxton Sears to help Clarkrange pull away and lead 40-31 after three complete quarters.
Bristol led Clarkrange in scoring with 17 points. Swallows scored 13, and Mason McWhirter scored 12. Taylor added six points, while Sears contributed five.
O’Leary led Kingston with 22 points in the loss. Belde scored eight.
The Buffaloes will be back in action Jan. 6 when they open district play by hosting Jackson County.
