During Memorial Day weekend, Altamont Christian Church partnered with Altamont First Baptist Church and publicly read the Bible at the triangle downtown.
The gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke and John were read by 23 people. Individuals and families signed up for 20-minute time slots from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday. The book of John was completed by 4:55 that afternoon.
Pastor Jody Kitts with Altamont Christian Church believes reading scripture in public gives hope to the community.
“I believe one of the most important things a church can do for its community is to give hope. Our society is devoid of substantial hope, but the Gospels reveal to us an absolute hope we have in Christ. To read the Bible in the public square is just one way to let people know of Jesus. My prayer to our community is they will hear God’s word and then see it in action from those who read it,” said Kitts.
Altamont Christian Church meets at 10 a.m. every Sunday, at 1351 S. Main Street.
