The Cumberland County Board of Education elected Chris King, 6th District, as the chairman pro tem during the Aug. 22 meeting.
This position is to be filled by King until a permanent chairman is elected when the new board members take office on Sept. 1.
Policy 1.200 states, “A majority of the Board may call for a special meeting to elect officers in the event vacancies occur in both the Chairman and Vice Chairman positions.”
Policy 1.200 has undergone some changes. It was edited at the policy committee meeting on June 11 and July 9, sent before the BOE on July 25, sent back to the policy committee to edit and review on Aug. 13, and sent before the BOE on Aug. 22.
Sheri Nichols, 3rd District, and Shannon Stout, 9th District, nominated King to be chairman pro tem.
All present BOE members except for Chairwoman Teresa Boston, 8th District, who passed her vote, voted for King to be chairman pro tem.
The BOE was to swear in the new board members to fill the District 2 and District 8 seats on Aug. 26 at 5 p.m. Scott VanWinkle, 2nd District, and Travis Cole, 8th District, will take office on Sept. 1. They will be replacing Boston and Robert Safdie, 2nd District.
Nicholas Davis, 5th District, and Earl Patton, the BOE’s legal representative, were absent from this meeting.
The next BOE working committees meeting will be on Sept. 10 at 4 p.m. in Central Services at 368 Fourth St. in Crossville.
