One traditional Cumberland County Fourth of July celebration is taking a hiatus this year.
“The Crab-Orchard Chapter, NSDAR, regrets that a decision has been made to cancel the 2024 Children’s Fourth of July Parade,” said Charlotte Reynolds, chapter regent, in a letter to the Chronicle.
Reynolds said the Daughters of the American Revolution began the parade as a means of teaching patriotism and love of country.
“However, the decisiton has been reached carefully and thoughtfully with the safety of all children being our prime concern due to construction at the Courthouse and the sidewalks on Main St.,” she continued.
City officials recommended an alternative route, but the DAR decided it did not offer the same experience as parading along Main St. downtown, Reynolds said.
“Plans are to return for the 2025 Fourth of July parade,” she added. “To all our young patriots, we wish you a very Happy Fourth!”
