THOMASVILLE — On the first official day of spring, Thomas County Central boys and girls soccer teams got a big win over region opponent Lee County. The Lady Jackets continued their unbeaten streak and, with Veterans falling to Houston County, clinch the region title.
The boys secured a very important 1-0 victory after having lost their previous meeting with Lee.
For the girls, it’s become almost expected for them to be completely dominant. Through 11 games they have allowed just four goals, two goals in region play, and the 4-0 shutout of Lee was their eighth shutout of the season.
Seniors Bailey Maroney and Mikayla Voyles made their senior night special with a goal apiece. Sophomore Addie Vickers netted two to put the game away.
The boys victory was much narrower, decided by just one goal by Yellow Jacket senior Oliver Perez. The biggest improvement in the eyes of Central head soccer coach Tony Voyles was his boys defense.
“I think we should have scored more goals and we deserved more goals, but we got the one that we needed and didn’t give up any goals, which is huge because we’ve been giving up goals,” Voyles said. “Even in a lot of our wins, we gave up goals that we shouldn’t have given up this year. So, to shut a team out and defend that well against a team that’s a lot of wins this year was really nice.”
Tuesday night’s shutout was a much needed improvement from the Yellow Jackets as it is their first shutout of the season. Before the win, Thomas County Central gave up at least one goal each game, often giving up two or three.
The Central boys have one more region contest against Veterans. Assuming they win out, Thomas County Central will claim both the girls and boys region titles.
