The Center for Lifelong Learning welcomes the public to participate in fall session classes Oct. 1-30 on Roane State Community College’s Cumberland County campus at 2567 Cook Rd.
Registration begins Sept. 23. Go to roanestate.edu/CLL for detailed information on the classes and the online catalog.
Enrollment to join the Center for Lifelong Learning is $40 per calendar year or $20 for the fall session. Afterward, students can attend as many classes as they want. A small materials fee may be charged for a specific class and is noted in the description.
All staff and instructors are volunteers. Email cllteam@cllcrossville.org for more information; a volunteer will respond usually within 24 hours. Note: the staff at Roane State is not equipped to answer questions about the Center for Lifelong Learning program.
Students are advised to bring a sweater or jacket; the campus thermostat is controlled at the main Roane State campus in Roane County.
Fall session classes include:
Home Maintenance 101. Oct. 1 and 8, 10:30 a.m.-noon. Topics will include troubleshooting problems and repair of drywall, plumbing, electrical features, doors, windows, flooring, masonry, and others. Taught by Richard Morawski in two sessions.
The Effects of the French and Indian War on the American Revolution. Oct. 2, 1:30-3 p.m. Join Dwayne McGhee as he explains how the events of the French and Indian War put the British Colonies in the crosshairs of the two major empires as they competed for control of North America.
Playing Bridge for Beginners. Wednesdays, Oct. 2-30, 9-11 a.m. Join Stuart Napear to be taught the beginning basics and terms in this five-session class, discussing the two styles of bidding, but will concentrate on the newer convention, American Standard.
Interior Design Bootcamp. Oct. 3, 1-2:30 p.m. Jessica Barbara Shatz can’t teach everything about color and interior design in a few hours, but she can teach students how to have confidence in their own design flair and creativity.
The Articles of Confederation: America’s First Constitution. Oct. 3, 10-11:30 a.m. Cheryl Brown is back to continue the series “Learn About Your Government” with a discussion about the problems that arose when this document was created and how the U.S. Constitution was meant to correct those problems.
American Sign Language (ASL 2). Mondays, Oct. 7-28, 9-11 a.m. Moving beyond the basic signs taught in ASL 1, students will begin to put together sentences and have conversations with each other and the instructors, Bob and Kathy Tolich.
Sacred Journey. Mondays, Oct. 7-28 (except Oct. 21), 11 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Spiritually curious and open to uncommon methods? Using selections from the Tanakh, the New Testament, and additional inspired writings, Christine Lister will help explore ways to interact with the text for a personal encounter with the Creator in this three-session class.
Mah Jong Made Easy. Oct 7, 9, 21 and 23, 2:30-4:30 p.m. In this four-session fun class, Nita Hawes will teach the basics of how to read American Mah Jong cards, rules of the game, and strategies for beginners.
Protecting the Obed Watershed. Oct. 9, 9-10:30 a.m. This course will present information about the Obed Watershed and its impact on the water in Cumberland County. Led by Bill Morgan.
Women and Heart Disease. Oct. 10, 1-2:30 p.m. Holly Hill will help participants identify the differences in men and women related to the development and outcome of cardiovascular disease, becoming familiar with the differences in symptoms of a heart attack between the genders, and discuss why women have poorer outcomes than men.
Reverse Mortgage 101. Oct. 10, 10-11:30 a.m. Antoinette Cassavaugh will cover the basics of the FHA insured reverse mortgage and the variation of that mortgage used for a purchase.
An Overview of the Art of Falconry. Oct. 14, 2-3:30 p.m. Mike Faircloth will explain the workings of training and hunting with wild caught raptors. He’ll share the gear required for both the raptors and the handlers, with accompanying videos for his presentation.
Alcohol Ink Ornaments. Oct. 15, 1-2:30 p.m. Michelle Bayless will teach students how to use alcohol ink to transform clear glass bulbs into unique decorations. A $5 materials fee is payable to the instructor on the day of the class.
Secure/Encrypted Email and Calendar: Do You Need it? Oct. 16, 1-2:30 p.m. Dave Korb will provide information on the benefits, features, and limitations of secure/encrypted email and calendar services.
What Does Healthy Aging Look Like? Oct. 17, 9:30-11 a.m. Shehla Rooney will discuss daily strategies and exercises to facilitate healthy aging, including suggestions for home safety.
The Three Presidents from Tennessee. Oct. 23, 1-2:30 p.m. Join JC Davis, dressed in period costumes, as he presents an entertaining look at Presidents Andrew Jackson, James. K Polk, and Andrew Johnson. Their lives before and after their terms will be discussed, including little-known facts.
Herbal Healers. Oct. 24, 10-11:30 a.m. Melody Rose will cover a wide variety of information about herbs, their basic terminology, their usage, how to harvest, dried versus fresh, herbs for cooking, presentation techniques, and creative use of herbs.
Learn About Our Cumberland County Playhouse. Oct. 29, 10-11:30 a.m. Bryce McDonald will entertain with stories about the beginnings of the Playhouse, what it takes for a theater to function, and many theater escapades.
Tales of Tragedy, Adventure, and Interesting Characters from the Great Smoky Mountains. Oct. 30, 1-2:30 p.m. John McArthur is a back with more stories from his childhood growing up exploring the Smoky Mountains. He’ll talk about some of the more notorious events and characters from the Smokies.
