Cumberland County High School drew first blood in its bowling rivalry with crosstown foe Stone Memorial Monday.
The Jets claimed the easy win in the boys match, and the Lady Jets had to fight a little harder to get the victory against the Lady Panthers.
The Cumberland County boys jumped out on top early and were never really challenged. They led 13-3 after the traditional games and ended cruising to the 22.5-4.5 win. CCHS also led by six after the two regular games and widened that lead to seven to get the 17-10 victory.
“The boys didn’t start off dominant in the first match,” said CCHS coach Daniel Rickman. “They made some adjustments that were needed to turn it into a dominant win.”
“The boys and girls have really grown as a team,” said Stone Memorial coach Tristessa Lutkemeyer. “Their individual games have come a long way since the beginning of the season. They are very committed to bettering their games!”
Cumberland County narrowly won the first traditional game, earning the 980-975 win. Elijah Schley led the way for CCHS with a 210 game.
Cody Gates had a 203 and Alex Smith had a 155. Jaydon Phan and Ethan Phan shot 134 and 130, respectively.
Stone Memorial was right in the mix. Mason Howard led the way with a 189. Gavin Selby shot 176, while Nathan Busler and Shilo Biber each had 157.
The Jets widened their margin in the second game when they beat the Panthers 1,133-882. Schley had high game again with as 219, and Ethan Phan came back with a 189.
Smith shot 189 and Cody Gates posted a 180. Malaki Watson shot 179.Kaden Barnes shot 170 for the Panthers.
Busler fired a 167, while Howard had a 148, and Biber posted a 141.
The two teams tied in the first baker game with identical 174s.
The Jets took the point in the final Baker game by winning 173-137.
“It takes a lot of pressure off of everyone when contributions are coming from the entire team,” Rickman said.
“After the first match, everyone did what was needed.”
Traditional games are contests where five players from each team bowl 10 frames each until the game is completed.
The Baker games consist of five players from each team bowling one frame at a time in an alternating format until all 10 frames have been completed.
The Cumberland County girls jumped on top of Stone Memorial early by winning both traditional games.
The Lady Jets took the first game 779-717 and then followed that up with a 769-675 victory in Game 2.
Lesley Garrett and Taylor Vickers had the hot hands for Cumberland County. Garrett led the CCHS girls in the first game with a 172. Vickers had a 159, while Anna Fusco shot 133 and Lexi Christian had a 125. Hailey Jones fired a 158 to set the pace for Stone Memorial.
Natalee Findley shot 119, while Ally Davis had a 115 and Abby Ulrich contributed a 114.
Things were a little better for Cumberland County in the second game.
Vickers fired a 159, while Garrett shot 139, Anna Fusco added a 133 and Christian carded a 125.
Findley led Stone Memorial with a 148 and Davis had a 122.
Rylee Griffin contributed a 110, while Jones shot 109.
The two teams split the Baker Games. Stone won the first one by a score of 155-129, but Cumberland County took the second one, 144-137.
“The girls are improving with every game,” Rickman said. “We only have two returning players from last season, so there has been a lot of on-the-job training.”
