BUFFALO — The Plattsburgh State women’s soccer team wrapped up its regular season in winning fashion, defeating Buffalo State, 1-0, on the road Saturday afternoon to clinch the No. 2 seed in the SUNYAC Tournament and a first-round bye.
The Cardinals entered the contest unbeaten in their last five matches, most recently earning a 1-0 road victory over Potsdam on Wednesday. Despite having already secured a postseason berth, Plattsburgh State looked to lock up the No. 2 seed and did just that with another strong defensive performance.
The opening 45 minutes proved to be an even, back-and-forth affair with limited quality scoring chances for either side. The Cardinals managed just two shots in the first half, while Buffalo State registered six attempts, though none found the back of the net, as the teams entered halftime deadlocked at 0-0.
Plattsburgh State came out with renewed energy in the second half, pushing the tempo and applying consistent pressure in search of the breakthrough. That pressure paid off early in the period when junior Sydney Myers slipped a perfectly timed through ball behind the defense to senior Sally Gliganic, who calmly finished into the back of the net to give the Cardinals a 1-0 lead. The goal marked Gliganic’s second career tally, while Myers collected her fifth assist of the season, having now been involved in 15 of Plattsburgh’s 26 goals on the year.
The Cardinals’ young but composed back line continued to shine, limiting Buffalo State’s opportunities down the stretch to secure the team’s eighth shutout of the season. Sophomore goalkeeper Desiree DuBois made five saves in the clean sheet.
With the win, Plattsburgh State improves to 9-6-2 overall and 6-1-2 in SUNYAC play. The Cardinals will now await the winner of Fredonia vs. Oswego in the SUNYAC semifinals on Nov 5.
Men’s Soccer
PLATTSBURGH — The Plattsburgh State men’s soccer team closed out its regular season on Saturday afternoon, battling to a 1-1 draw with Buffalo State in a match with major postseason implications.
The result secured the Cardinals the No. 3 seed in the upcoming SUNYAC Tournament, setting up a home quarterfinal matchup against Fredonia next weekend.
Coming off a dominant 6-0 victory over Potsdam that clinched a playoff berth, the Cardinals entered the contest seeking a win to lock up the No. 2 seed and earn a first-round bye. Meanwhile, Buffalo State, unbeaten against Plattsburgh State since 2019, needed just a draw to hold the second position.
The Cardinals controlled much of the first-half possession, dictating the pace but struggling to generate clear scoring chances early on. The Bengals capitalized on their lone opportunity of the half in the 38th minute when Diego Rivera, the SUNYAC’s leading goal scorer, headed home a corner kick to give Buffalo State a 1-0 lead. Despite outshooting the Bengals 5-1 in the opening frame, Plattsburgh State entered halftime trailing 1-0.
Needing at least a draw to avoid dropping to the No. 5 seed, the Cardinals came out firing in the second half, ramping up offensive pressure in search of the equalizer. Their persistence paid off in the 61st minute when junior Tristan Laundree threaded a pass through to classmate Xavier Kamba, who slotted home the finish to level the score at 1-1.
With the tie, the Cardinals move to 10-2-5 overall and 5-2-2 in SUNYAC play, securing the No. 3 seed in the conference tournament. They will now host Fredonia in the SUNYAC quarterfinals next weekend at the Field House Complex.
