Back in the day, a Chevy SS was a sign of performance on four wheels, rapid acceleration and the envy of the neighborhood. The 1961 Impala was first badged with the Super Sport designation and popularized by Beach Boy lyrics… “She’s real fine my 409” the following year.
Sixty-five years later, today’s SS is at the top of the Chevy Blazer EV lineup, one of three electric trims.
LT and RS trims start the lineup in the mid $40s to $50s. Each SUV has a myriad of configurations including front, rear or all-wheel drive with larger wheels available.
A 220- horsepower single electric motor powers the base LT front wheel drive trims while all-wheel drive RS models get two electric motors and a respectable 300 horsepower.
That translates to a six second run up to 60-miles-per-hour according to Chevrolet.
But if you have the coin and need for speed, you will want to check out the SS with 615 horsepower. Our outrageous test car, a two-row spacious SUV with plenty of cargo room can be in your driveway in the mid $60s.
Performance rivals Tesla Model Y, Cadillac Lyriq, Hyundai Ioniq 5 and Ford Mustang Mach-E.
At our independent test track, the SS repeatedly clocked the 60 mile-per-run in 3.3 ticks. Another SS plus is its 300-mile range compared with 220 for single motor models.
Our tester rode on 22-inch aluminum wheels with carbon fiber painted pockets and self-seal all season rubber. They hug the pavement in city and highway travel. Cabin noise is near non-existent even under brisk acceleration.
Sport -tuned suspension and Brembo front brake calipers keep the Blazer humming along with sure-footedness found in few rivals. We found the Blazer delivered a compliant ride with minimal body roll during severe maneuvers.
The SS is also the only all-wheel-drive model with 190-kW fast charge capable of adding 78 miles of range in 10 minutes.
Its new dashboard layout features a 17.7 inch diagonal advanced color LCD display with Google built-in but if you are looking for wireless Android Auto or Apple CarPlay, you won’t find either.
Navigation system controls are easy to configure without much drilling down found in some rivals.
Every Blazer also includes an 11-inch driver display to monitor electric functions whether you chose single or dual motors. Both displays give the Blazer a futuristic look.
