MARTINSBURG, W.Va. — Calvary opened Mason-Dixon Christian Conference play with a 3-2 overtime victory at Faith on Tuesday.
“Defensively, Gerald Mihailovich and Brady Morgan were key players in stopping the attack from Faith,” Calvary assistant coach Bill Scritchfield said. “Peyton Poland also made some huge saves in sealing the victory.”
The Eagles (2-0, 1-0 MDCC) struck first when Silas Leith placed a corner kick into the six-yard box to Elijah Ziler.
He fired into the far left corner to put Calvary up 1-0 at the 28:30 mark.
The game was tied at halftime along with shots, with each team taking nine.
In the second half, the Falcons (0-1) took the lead on a pair of unassisted goals.
Diego Zavala dribbled across the 18-yard box and sent the ball into the top left corner at the 46:52 mark to put Faith on the board.
Jared Keppley fired from the far left corner and reached the top right corner of the net, giving the Falcons a 2-1 lead at the 49:07 mark of the half.
At the 57:45 mark, Sammy Scritchfield was fouled in the box.
He lined up for a penalty kick and sent the ball into the bottom left corner, tying the game at 2.
Seven minutes into overtime, Chais Murphy sent a through ball to Scritchfield who fired to the top left corner for the game-winner.
Calvary finished with a 18-15 edge in shots and 7-1 lead in corners.
Poland recorded 12 saves for the Eagles while Daniel Hobbs stopped eight shots for the Falcons.
Calvary hosts Broadfording on Friday at 4:30 p.m.
