HAGERSTOWN — Calvary surged ahead 2-0 to hold off Heritage for a 2-1 victory Thursday.
The game was a nail-biter, with the teams locked in a scoreless draw at halftime, but Calvary broke the deadlock in the second half with two well-timed goals.
The first came at the 55:20 mark when Calvary’s Reagan Weeks found the back of the net from the edge of the 18-yard box.
At the 67:00 mark, Lauren Engle extended the Eagles’ advantage to 2-0 with a goal assisted by Jaiel Murphy. The quick combination play between the two Calvary players showcased the team’s chemistry and offensive prowess, Calvary coach Scott Weeks said.
However, Heritage wasn’t ready to give up just yet. With four minutes remaining, Nadine Martz fired an unassisted shot from inside the 18-yard box, making it 2-1 and putting pressure on Calvary in the closing moments.
Despite the late surge from Heritage, Calvary’s defense held strong, and the final whistle blew with the Eagles securing the victory.
“I’m really proud of how the girls played today,” coach Weeks said. “We knew we needed to come out shooting and control possession, and they did that well. Now, we just need to land a few more of those shots on goal to finish stronger.”
The game was a testament to Calvary’s offensive dominance, with the Eagles registering a 33 shots compared to Heritage’s nine. Calvary put 21 shots on goal, keeping Heritage’s goalkeeper busy throughout the match.
Selah Livengood, the Calvary goalkeeper, was instrumental in preserving the lead, finishing with nine saves.
With the win, Calvary moved to 2-1. The Eagles are at Broadfording on Tuesday at 4:30 p.m.
