RAWLINGS — Returning from a week-long spring break, Calvary took a little time to get back into rhythm but ultimately secured a 2-0 victory over Heritage on Monday evening.
Calvary looked a bit sluggish out of the gate, with touches and timing just slightly off, but still managed to dominate possession and opportunities. The Eagles fired off 27 shots, 14 of them on goal, while limiting Heritage to just six shots with three on frame.
Reagan Weeks gave Calvary an early spark, scoring just 4:03 into the match with a strike from outside the right side of the six-yard box.
Though Calvary kept the pressure on, the remainder of the first half saw a few missed chances as the team continued to work off the rust, heading into the break up 1-0.
In the second half, Heritage came out with renewed energy and urgency, spending much more time on Calvary’s side of the field. It played with intensity in an effort to get back into the game.
Despite Heritage’s increased possession and pressure, Calvary’s defense —anchored by defensive backs Tessa Cessna, Madie Robinette and Kaitlyn Bender — remained firm, keeping Heritage from turning their push into dangerous scoring chances.
“When we needed a stop, Kaitlyn and Maddie delivered,” Calvary head coach Scott Weeks said. “They fought for every ball, stayed aggressive and never let Heritage get comfortable near our goal.”
Dana Baker sealed the win for Calvary in the 66th minute, breaking free for a one-on-one opportunity and calmly tapping the ball into the left corner of the net to make it 2-0.
“Our timing and touch were definitely off a little early, and Heritage made us work in the second half,” Weeks said. “But our girls showed resilience. Even when Heritage came hard at us, our defense held strong and kept them from getting quality shots.”
Calvary (6-1) looks to build on the win when it hosts Broadfording in a non-conference matchup Thursday at 4:30 p.m.
