Kaylie Dalgar already held the Pentucket 5K school record, broken over her tremendous four-year high school cross country career.
And Tuesday night, she added one more.
At the fourth CAL regular season meet of the indoor campaign, the UMass Amherst commit won the 2-Mile with a blazing time of 11:20.98. That not only powered her to crossing the finish line in first, but also broke the previous 13-year-old school indoor track record held by Becca Morse since 2011 (11:30.17). Dalgar’s record-setting performance was the highlight from a strong day — filled with personal-bests — for the Pentucket girls.
But in the end, Newburyport got the best of the Panthers.
Thanks to wins in seven of the 11 events, the Newburyport girls were able to race past Pentucket, 66-34. The Clippers also improved to 3-0 on the year with a win over Essex Tech, 72-28, in a make up of the meet that was snowed out last week.
“There were some great wins last night,” said Newburyport coach Brian Moore. “The girls were finally able to get past a great Pentucket team. The race of the day was the 600, where Morgan Felts and Devin Stroope set the Nos. 1 and 2 times in our state division.”
Indeed, the stars showed up for the Clippers.
In the aforementioned 600, Felts crossed with a winning time of 1:38.93, while Stroope was right behind her in 1:39.05. Sophomore superstar Lucy Buchmayr continued to dominate in the sprints for the Clippers, winning both the 55-meter (7.78) and the 55-hurdles (8.99). Other event wins for the Clippers was Blake Parker in the 1000 (3:17.62), Stroope in the long jump (16-4), Kayley Simons in the shot put (25-4.50), and the 4×200 relay team of Buchmayr, Felts, Reese Bromby and Stroope (1:49.56).
Besides Dalgar, Pentucket (1-2) got victories from Wynter Smith in the high jump (5-0), Regan Breen in the 300 (45.57), Susan Wisniewski in the Mile (5:21.25) and the 4×400 relays team of Aly Daly, Smith, Breen and Brighton Seymour (4:30.65).
On the boys side, it was a similar story.
Newburyport beat Pentucket by an almost identical score to what the girls did, 65-35, while in its make-up meet against Essex Tech it cruised to an 82-18 victory. Much like the girls, the Clippers boys are also 3-0 for the winter.
It was a pretty versatile win for the Clippers. In the middle to distance events, Jalen Wise took care of the 600 (1:27.08), Michael Mohoric won the 1000 (2:44.77), Aimon Fadil won the Mile (4:48.68) and Drew Cassino crossed first in the 2-Mile (11:06.53). You then almost had a clean sweep of the field events with Gus Webster, Alex Rully and Kyle Lisauskas all clearing 5-6 in the high jump, and Cade Pessolano winning the shot put with a season-best throw (41-1.75).
For the Pentucket boys, Joel Spaulding had a tremendous day winning both the 55-meter (6.62) and the 300 (37.06).
AMESBURY: DONOVAN BREAKS HIS OWN SHOT PUT SCHOOL RECORD
The count is now up to two.
Aiden Donovan broke the Amesbury shot put record a couple of weeks ago, and now has done it for the second time this winter. During Tuesday’s double-victory over Hamilton-Wenham (65-35) and Lynnfield (72-28), the senior UMass Amherst commit topped his previous mark with a winning toss of 52-4.50.
But something says that new record is probably not safe.
The Redhawks dominated the day as far as their meets were concerned, with Michael Sanchez being a triple-event winner. The senior won the 55-meter (6.70) and 300 (36.08), then teammed with Connor Scialdone, Joe Puleo and his brother, Max Sanchez, to win the 4×200 (1:36.27). Scialdone himself also took first in the high jump (5-8), and the Redhawks got wins from Maxx Rodrigues in the 600 (1:30.73), Max White in the hurdles (8.97) and Brody Tonks in the long jump (18-7.50).
And the Amesbury girls performed just as well.
It was a similar double-meet victory for the Redhawks in a make-up from last week’s postponment, as the team beat Hamilton-Wenham, 74-25, and Lynnfield, 60-40.
Earning individual event victories for the Redhawks were Sarah Burdick in the 600 (1:53.55) and the 55-hurdles (9.84), Bayleigh Shanahan in the 55-meter (7.58), Haley Jezowski in the 1000 (3:55.12), Gabby Peixoto in the high jump (4-4) and Alexis LeBlanc in the shot put (27-1).
TRITON: BOTH BOYS AND GIRLS CRUISE PAST ESSEX TECH
It was another strong meet for both Triton squads.
On the boy’s side, the Vikings picked up a comfortable 80-20 win over Essex Tech, while the girls cruised past the Hawks, 65-35.
The boys — now 2-1 — won all but two events. Besides the relays, the Vikings got individual wins from Hugo Huang in both the 55-hurdles (9.12) and the high jump (5-4), Jack Lyman in the 300 (38.23), Andrew Doherty in the 600 (1:31.26), Cassidy McBee in the 1000 (2:55.19), Duncan MacDonald in the 2-Mile (10:31.37), Michael Coco in the long jump (18-5) and Liam Kneeland in the shot put (38-4.75).
For the girls, breakout star Colleen Johnson was a double-event winner in both the 55-hurdles (10.17) and the high jump (4-8). Elsewhere for the Vikings (1-2), Arianna Basile took first in the 300 (45.69), Sarah Ewell won the 600 (1:50.84), Danika Prendergast won the 1000 (3:33.91), Mia Jaworski took the Mile (6:19.55), Ava Burl won the 2-Mile (12:41.89) and Ella Treitel-Poore took the long jump (14-11.50).
